In other words, to create those 175,000 "new service opportunities," $6 billion will be re-distributed, thus destroying countless more opportunities elsewhere. Jobs, services, products that will never be realized.

During and right after the elections, I was accused of being a blind Obama fan, who would always defend whatever he was doing. Those who've known me for a while know that this is not true.

But now he has finally done something that gives me the opportunity to prove this in public :)
This is a ridiculous bill (mandatory volunteer service? WTF!?) and I'd fight it every step of the way.

I am all in favor of people doing volunteer work, but making it mandatory is a) missing the point, and b) illegal imo. Now all they need is cirsp uniforms and a powerful insignia.
This is even worse than the mandatory pledge of allegiance.

No mention is made of individual rights in the amendment, just those of the organization. That allows people involved with the organizations to protest or do any of the things they want that are "prohibited" as long as they are acting independently.


Moreover, the so called Congressional Commission On Civic Service is tasked with discovery not action.

I think if it came to pass that an actual bill was put forth requiring service of any group of individuals, there would be hell to pay and a lot more attention payed too. For now, its good to know who's names are attached to this thing.

I mostly see shoddy internet journalism here. I am not really worried about this particular bill since it doesn't introduce mandates; however, I will keep my eyes peeled for an opportunity to volunteer for a little civil disobedience. :)
