Thanked: 150Travelers Insurance Company
So there may be a possibility for me to take a new position with Travelers Insurance Company. Are there any current or former employees of Travelers Insurance that could give me some insite into the corporate culture, what to expect, ...? What do you like best about working for Travelers, and what do you feel needs improvement?
Any assistance is greatly appreicated.

Travelers is one of the companies we represent in our agencies. I don't know what department or area you'd potentially work in, but they're the insurance products they offer are competitive however their rating software is archaic and the reps freely admit it as well.
The reps that I'm familiar with have worked for years with Travelers, so that has to say something. Some other marketing reps bounce from company to company like a pinball in a pinball machine.
I've learned long ago to never burn a bridge with a marketing rep. Today they may be your personal lines rep for company A and tomorrow your commercial lines rep for company B.

Matt,
They get the Eagle seal of approval. That company is a good buy if you are looking at securities IMO. The balance sheet looks good, strong quick ratio. It looks to be a strong company that is currently undervalued but around for the long haul.

Opinions will vary, but according to the March 2009 edition of the Minnesota Insurance magazine on page 12 Chairman and CEO of Travelers Insurance Company received $12.8 million total compensation in 2008. Salary of $1 million, $5 million in non-equity incentive pay, realized $6.2 million on vesting shares and had other compensation of $622,601.
Take it for what it is, but in relation to many CEO compensation, that's like working for minimum wage! Frugality relatively speaking?

I work with the regulatory compliance folks as a state reguletor and they are first rate. They fully disclose everything, which some do not, you have to drag every thing out of some, and good looking also. (I've seen it all, has no impact, although if I was younter!!). I'm just a hard core empirical skeptic and most of them know it by now.
When I was in the private sector I knew a bunch of Travelers folks, some of which are former St. Paul from way back when, and they were all pros.
Keep in mind that in any organization there are super pricks. Not just pricks, but super pricks.
As a piece of advice, don't ever work for a lawyer. They micro manage, are super pricks, and will not make a decision. I know more about insurance law than some of these pretenders ever will on their best day. Take it from one who knows, they abhor making a decision and will want to put disclaimers on everything. I've never been more frustrated in my life. I told my Director I disagreed with her analysis on a situation today, and she finally agreed to do the right thing, both from a moral and statutory standpoint. Incredible educated ignorance as compared to 40 years street experience.
Well, I guess the last paragraph is a rant, sorry. Non-the-less, keep it in mind.
