Financially, probably. But they would have had to call, and what are the chances they know a the number of a service?

I said that kind of tongue in cheek. Scarsdale has a reputation....

Actually, with the mall and several hotels right there, finding a cab wouldn't have been too difficult. If they grew up in Scarsdale, they would have spent a fair amount of time in this area and it would be familiar.

I'm sure they were a little shaken up and I'm not saying I necessarily agree with the mother's actions - I don't know enough about their relationship/situation, but I don't think it's as bad as it's being made out to be in the media or by the police.

When it comes to what kid's know, I find the safest bet is to assume they know nothing.

Oh I'm fully aware of Scarsdale's reputation. I spent the first 18 years of my life there.

I'm not sure that they would necessarily be familiar with the area; I know that I sure wasn't. Typically, we would drive to the mall (this was the Galleria, before the Westchester existed). I didn't pay all that much attention on the ride there, and we would park in the garage. As a result, I had no idea how to get there, but once inside I knew my way around.

I know there are often cabs around, but I'm pretty sure they don't just pick up passangers. I could very well be wrong because WP has changed a lot in the last few years and I don't live down there anymore, but when I was down there you had to call the taxi's dispacher to get a cab. They did not pick up pedestirans like they do in NYC.

Ray, that reminds me of an "epic fail" picture of a woman driving a volkswagon - she rolled the window up on her hair but didn't seem to notice. Maybe that would have been a better way to punish the kids... j/k
