Starting out with pipe smoking is sort of like starting out with straight razors. There is a learning curve and you won't know what you really like until you go through an assortment of pipes and tobaccos. I started with corn cob pipes and I am glad that I did. They are cheap, they smoke well and it is not a large investment to see if pipe smoking is something that you are going to continue with. General Douglas MacArthur was one of many celebrities who favored the "Missouri Meerschaums" .
I have bought many vintage (used) briar pipes on ebay. Here again it is like straight razors. You have to know what you are doing or it is a crap shoot. Vendors such as Smoking Pipes dot com carry 'estate pipes' that are refurbished and that is another option. It is an enjoyable pastime and I get a lot of pleasure out of it.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 1262I have been smoking pipes off and on for about 11 years....
Unfortunately when i tried to start up again this time my stuff was missing
I've only owned two pipes though, a nice briar and a cheap corncob i bought for when i went fishing.
I think i may spend a little extra this time and go for meerschaum. I enjoyed it a lot more than cigars, plus the room does not smell like ass afterwards(like cigars)

One of my favorite blends is GL Pease Robusto. If you are a cigar smoker you would probably like it as it has cigar leaf in it.

I've ordered from smokingpipes.com and have had good dealings with them. They have a great variety of estate pipes cleaned up and ready to go. I also like pipesandcogars.com and cupojoes.com
When it comes to breaking in new pipes, I've had the best luck with just filling them and smoking them slowly so they don't get too hot. Before I dump the final ash, I put my thumb over the bore and gently shake the ash so that the walls of the bowl ate coated with a thin layer. That helps promote the formation of cake inside the bowl.

+1 on the break in. I've tried honey or saliva rubbed on the inside of the bowl but now just fill and smoke slowly. The shaking the bowl with a ash is something I got from a fellow named Jim Beard who posted on pipe forums quite a bit with a lot of good info including The Professor's Pipe-Sweetening Treatment seen here.
