    Default The Mustache Thread

Do you have a 'stache, beard, goatee, Van Dyke, or some other creation. Well then lets see and talk about them.

I have started attempting to grow out my 'stache and have purchased some great Oregon local 'stache wax to make that happen.

Right now I am sporting a small but successful handlebar.

I hope to have a Dali by years end.

I too have a moustache. It is my third atempt since 2007. I started out by having a beard (a trimmed one...) but, by the time my Dovo arrived, the beard was gone and the moustache started to feel threatened by both the razor and my girlfriend... let me tell you this: being compared to your father in law is not, I repeat IS NOT sexy... So, it was gone after a while. But I had moustache issues still to be resolved and last Summer, and taking advantage of a road trip alone and with my brother, also a very moustachioed gentleman, the thing just started to grow... but when I came back, the girlfriend resumed her attack on the hairy under-nose section of my face. I gave in... again. However, in February, being with no razor blades on my DE (I was at a friend's place where I am not allowed - because of time issues - to shave with my straight razors), the hair on my face started to grow. And, when I came back, I allowed the beard to stay for a couple of days to support the shadow of a moustache that was appearing, before it was strong enough to fly solo. And I am very happy to say that, untill this day, the moustache is still where it's supposed to be: under my nose! I resisted temptation and arrasement from my girl; I resisted self doubt; I resisted the comments of some friends that decided to compare me with Freddy Mercury... You know what my answer was? "Ba-da-ba-bupi!!!"

Growing as moustache is a thing of pride. It is a facial accesory, sure. It may look good on you, or not... but, not only does it grow on your face, it also "grows on you"... And you are reluctant to shave it off because it was so much trouble for it to look presentable, more than a teen-age fluff on your lip... It's here to stay. And I've had more than one compliment on it... Plus, the girlfriend is growing into it...

Singlewegde, thanks for starting this thread. It may turn out to be a cool read... Right now I sport a small, discrete gentlemanly moustache and side-burns. But I too want to work on a slight turn on the tips... What king of wax would I need for that?

I've had a mustache (mostly Magnum-type) since I was 22. I'm close to 45 now. Most of this period I've also had sideburns.

I am using Oregon Wild Hair

It is a local company. The product is great. You can definitely get a Dali style out of the hold.

Don't let the fact that they use musk fool you. The stuff smells like honey and holds firm but not stiff if that makes sense. Easily molds back in the day if you have a fly away. And does not melt over hot coffee.

I can twist my ends. I am working into that. Right now they are just upturned.

There are a lot of waxes out there, Firemans, Fathers, Pinaud, and there is a Hungarian wax that is supposed to be the one that Dali used for his curls.

I'll post a pic of my stache. My lip has not seen the light of day for 16 years. Yes it took me that long to grow it. But know it grows like a weed so hopefully it will grow like crazy.

Since high school, I have always had a mustache. There was one time I shaved it off. My wife had never seen me without it. She had seen pictures of me without it, but being confronted with the reality of me and my bare upper lip, it was more than she could take. I made this one concession to her and have been mustachioed ever since.

My beard is a different issue, I have never allowed her to say when or if I have a beard. I usually grow it in the fall when the weather gets cool enough. I have shaved it off on the 1st day of spring every year for the last 34.

Because our town was celebrating its sesquicentennial, there was a beard growing contest and I was asked to participate. When we were up[ being judged another guy suggested I grow a handle bar. I hadnever really considered it before. After winning the contest for the fullest beard (I was informed that I would have won in every category except the reddest beard), I trimmed things back but allowed the 'stach to grow. I did the handlebar thing for a while, but decided it would look better after things grew out more. The 'stach now extends 1 and 1/2 inches past the corner of my mouth. I am about to start sculpting. I have the Oregon Wild hair (which is pretty darn good stuff), Pinaud, and Luckey Tiger.

    How is the lucky tiger?

A buddy of mine is considering it. I am trying to get him over to Wild Hair, cause that is what he has, some serious wild hair.

This wax interests me... Do you think this might be a good "entry level" mustache wax? Might it work on a small, yet well groomed mustache? I mean, I am willing to grow some points, but I am definitetly not in the craving for a big handle-bar mustache... my goal is a small RAF like lip appendage with curvy points. Something discrete... What do you think?
Thanks for pointing this out. (No pun intended... )

Hey guys, most of my shaving years have been
spent clean-shaven, but I recently took the time
to experiment with a couple of different styles
when I was staying in California (and the wife
    as safely secured in Canada).

    I tried a goatee + mustache, small goatee +
    soul-patch + mustache, and soul-patch +
    mustache.

When I got back home, it took only hours before
SWMBO was obeyed. I miss it now, so the top
lip is going into hiding again and I'll have to deal
    with the consequences!

    Wish me luck boys,

    - Scott

To quote my dear granddad: "A kiss without a moustache, is like an egg without salt"

(And boy do I like quoting this; the other way round as well...)

    Good luck Scott!

    Good luck, Scott!

I've suffered some presure when I decided to grow out my mustache, this time. But I thrived and the lip-rug is living up to be a true mustache. My girlfriend still finds a way to keep the presure but I ignore it. I just think that this is not the thing that will make her leave me... and you know what? After just 2 months of shrubbiness, I believe that she has grown to like it! She never says it, though. I remember that the first time I grew a respectable under-nose-fluffyness she didn't like it. But when I shaved it... she actually sounded a bit disapointed!

So... despite what our women say, they like the mustaches. That's it!
