New addition to the family
Meet Harper... he's a little over a year old (we think) and is a Labrador Retriever/Chinese Shar-Pei mix. Talk about an interesting mix, lol. He is all lab except for his slightly longer body and loose skin. He isn't really wrinkly but the loose skin is visible. Specially in the face and around the mouth. He is more like a water park attraction than a dog when he drinks but that is due to his overlarge jowls, lol.
The Shar-Pei in him is probably why he ended up a stray. When he was rescued by Labrador Rescuers he needed not only to be neutered but to have entropic surgery done on both eyes. He is recovering from all that work now and still needs the stitches removed from under one eye. That happens next week thankfully.
He's going to be a lot of work as he has some separation anxiety and wasn't very well socialized but he makes up for it with his intelligence and happy attitude. I think all his energy is going to wear me down though, lol.

Thanked: 586Good luck with Harper. He's a nice looking dog. It has been my experience that mutts make the best pets. My experience also tells me that high energy dogs are easy to train if you can tire them out a few times a week if not every day. He looks like he must be a hundred pounds or so. I bet he's as string as an ox. Have you considered getting him involved in weight pulling? Check out International Weight Pull Association

He weighs around 70- 80 pounds but is under weight. I figure he needs another ten pounds or so to hit a healthy weight. And yeah he is an ox, lol. Looking at him I figure he has some growing to do too besides being under weight so not sure where he will end up.
As for the weight pull he gets enough of that pulling me around the neighborhood. Working on training that out of him though before he runs me down.

Nice looking pooch!!
I used to have a shar-pei, but her dander made me itch like crazy. I hope everything goes well with him.

Thanked: 53Great looking mutt! I'm a big fan of rescued dogs - usually all they need is love and discipline.

Thanked: 293Here's my rescued pit/boxer mix, Mack. I've had him two years and he's seriously the best dog I've ever been exposed to. When I got him, he had no name, knew no commands, but had a great attitude and lots of energy. Now, he's still got lots of energy but is well behaved.
Anyway, obviously I'm biased. I wish you the best of luck with Harper, Tom, and I hope your experience is as good as mine has been.
Here's a pic of my meat-head:
