It's interesting to read comments about shop owners. I've been running my own small business for nearly 40 yrs. I try to be attentive and businesslike always. However, I can say, that as well as bad mannered shop owners there are some very obnoxious customers, fortunately there aren't very many but over the years but they can grind you down.
What amazes me is the vast difference in perception there can be between one customer and another. I know my prices are fair and comparable and many customers tell me so, but occasionally someone will ask for a large discount. I get the feeling that that type of person may tell as many people as possible that my price is too high or my attitude unreasonable.'Living the dream, one nightmare at a time'

We had a yard sale (where yo pile your crap in the lawn and try to get a dollar for it) recently and noticed that certain customers like to haggle a little too much.
Specifically people from Haiti.
Everything they picked up they wanted for a quarter.
EVERYTHING!!
shoes --- you take a qwata?
electric drill -- you take a qwata?
finally when he picked up a stack of Beatles records and asked me if I would take a "qwata" for each I asked him to let me see them.
Records in hand I told him to GET THE OUT OF MY *****YARD.
I guess sometimes I know how the shop owner feels ! LOL
oh come on, like you guys are surpised to hear me say I kicked someone out of my yard at a rummage sale
"qwata"?
why the F would I put a $40 tag on it and then take 25 cents???
EDIT I like Haitians, but have seen this at every yard sale I've had, from every Haitian who has come.
I'm suggesting that the excessive haggling might be cultural (like Asians, they expect you to dicker)Last edited by gratewhitehuntr; 06-02-2009 at 07:17 PM.

no that was just an example and the Beatles were like 50 cents each
I think he really offered $5 for a table saw I had $40 on
he also offered $20 for a shotgun I was selling for $300 (and a deal then even)
THEN he insulted the Beatles
now I see them coming and when asked to lower I state that "the price is on it" and just go back to what I was doing (probably nothing)
EDIT
when I say see them coming I mean they drive a $50,000 truck with $3000 rims
so you can tell who they areLast edited by gratewhitehuntr; 06-02-2009 at 07:28 PM.

I can respect that many customers who go into shops are assholes. However, it seems like common courtesy to me that if a pleasant person smiles, and asks you how you are, you should respond with a smile and a fine-thanks-how-are-you? Instead, some shop people just eye you and ignore you. Common courtesy is really all I ask for, whether it's on the street or in a business. Maybe I'm off my rocker or just too southern, who knows...
