My cat was a semi feral alley cat that we rescued after he got in a fight with something that badly mauled him. We knew him at the shop I work in as he was one of a group we would put food and water out for.
We took the badly wounded cat to a vet who works on feral cats (not all vets will) and had him neutered while he was there. He was a sweetheart before the neutering and is even better since.
If you don't have him fixed soon marking territory will become ingrained and you will always have that as a problem. All of the normal dominant male cat behavior that makes it tough for the owner and the neighbors will disappear and you will have a better pet than you have now. Go for it, don't wait.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Give him a few days to get over the procedure and you'll find he is better than before. It may take a little time before the hormones that are still operating dissipate but once the testosterone or whatever lightens up the marking and caterwauling will go away.

Thanked: 29If you care about him that much you really should consider keeping him in the house full time. A cat outside can get hurt or killed by many things. Cats like to crawl up next to a warm engine block in a car and then get hit by the fan when it is started. They can get sick or killed by feral cats or dogs. He could get hit by a car. He could get caught in a varmit trap. He could eat a poisoned mouse. There are many things that could make him never come home from a day outside.
Neutering a male cat is definitely priority 1 and he will snap back real quick. He will never know what happened or that he is missing anything.

Speaking as someone who doesn't like cats (dog person here, though I don't have any atm), I agree wholeheartedly. Because I really hate it when other people's cats s**t on my lawn where I want my kids to be able to play without having to worry about them stepping in their crap or picking it up with their bare hands (the youngest is not yet 2).
I am a kind man to humans and animals alike, so my actions stay limited to cursing and spreading used coffee grounds (which seems to help somewhat).
But if you ever wonder why cats sometimes disappear for good, then the chances are that someone got fed up with what your cat was doing on/with their property, day after day after day.Last edited by Bruno; 06-04-2009 at 09:22 AM.

Thanked: 402Bruno, most cats dig a hole and cover their poop afterwards.
Must admit that a hole in the lawn is not nice either but at least the stuff is not lying around. Some others (who lost their instincts due to domestication) don't but they are few.
Blade Wielder that looks like a mass of cat beer!
