One of my mom's former co-workers (he's now deceased) showed up at some social function when I was a kid. He was a veteran and told me of how he was captured by the Germans and how he escaped at night by killing a couple of soldiers with a knife. I thought that was pretty cool at the time, 'cause Wolfenstein 3D had just come out. But it must've been pretty horrible.
I was watching the Band of Brothers marathon the other day and I saw that scene where they're attacking the unsuspecting German encampment, and the first guy over the hill encounters a German soldier who's just a kid. The look of disbelief on the German's face and the look of regret on the American soldier's face in that brief instant said it all. And then he has to gun him down. It was well-directed.
