Thanked: 4942Cast Iron Skillets
I know this sounds goofy, but I love cooking with an old cast iron skillet. The wife hates it. Loves her new fancy stuff. I will never get rid of the old stuff, even though I may end up with a few knots in the head when I wake up. She practices the old martial are of "You gotta sleepa somatima". Know what I mean.....lmao. Lynn

Those cast iron pans can last for lifetimes if they're maintained properly (oil cured). I still have the one my Grandmother gave me twenty years ago and it cooks every bit as good as the teflon. With the teflon you don't need as much oil, but my gal still dumps it in the teflon pan. I'll never understand it.

I've got a nice cast iron skillet that lives in my camping gear. Had to break it out for backup on some fried potatoes the other night. Also working on breaking in a nice, big dutch oven for camping. Once it's broken in, cast iron is great.

I have been married 25 years and we got a cast iron skillet for a wedding gift, it is still used long after the teflon ones have been thrown away.

I've got four cast iron skillets, three rounds different sizes and a large square one. I love em... The wifey wants new modern pans, teflon coated marvels that match the kitchen.
I've always gone more for function than form.

It will be interesting to see what happens with teflon skillets now. One of the chemicals used to make teflon poses more of a cancer risk than DuPont let on.

Thanked: 0I have a 75-80 year old cast iron dutch oven which I just love. We also use "modern" cast iron skillets. One of the things about a properly seasoned cast iron skillet is that while they are not quite non-stick, they are definitely low-stick. Also, you do get little bits of iron from them in your diet, so you can cut down on iron supplements if you consistently use cast iron.
As an aside to the harmless properties of Teflon, there are some birds (Quaker parakeets) which will die if a Teflon pan is pre-heated nearby at too high a temp.

My wife has a black belt in that too !!!!
Love my cast iron pans too. I usually oil treat / bake them about every three months, to keep them fresh.
If you coat the bottoms with Ivory Soap (bar) you can cook on the fire outside without a carbon build-up too.
