Any combat or tac medics in the house?
I have a few hours left for my EMT and then my tests. I was considering going to tac med school afterward. Not sure what I would do with it, I have been considering joining the PD here and am to old to join the military.
Just wanted to know what was involved with it. I obviously know that you go out with SWAT or similar and plug bullet wounds, burns, amputations, etc.. Just want to hear some experiences.

Thanked: 6Singlewedge,
How old are you? If you are too old for the Military you most likely will be too old for most P.D.'s , at least in the Northeast. Especially considering that you are now able to initially enlist in the Army at up to 42 years old. Before you go looking to do anything high speed though, get some ambulance experience, especially if you are just starting out, those mundane calls are great building blocks and give you the opportunity to polish your skills.
If you just finished EMT basic, and have only done minimal clinical time you will especially need to get a whole lot more experience under your belt. Not knocking you but I have been there, being high speed in class with friends is one thing, going to someones house on a holiday with the whole family there and doing CPR , etc. is an entirely different ballgame. The back of an ambulance can be one of the loneliest places in the world when your with a dying patient and your working your butt off and things aren't going your patients way. Not rying to scare or offend you, I was where your at once and glad I worked an ambulance in a big city. It led to Nursing for me but I still do volunteer as Firefighter/EMT in my town.
If you do go for an EMS job, do your best to get a good solid mentor. Don't get get to down if you get some burn out who act's like they dont' have time for you, just bide your time and try not to pick up there habits till you can get a better partner . I had great mentors in both Nursing and EMS and it does make a difference.Last edited by citizensoldierny; 07-11-2009 at 02:56 PM. Reason: info.
