Google OS- Discussion
Google set to wage OS war with Microsoft
So Google has announced that they're going to be releasing an OS sometime in 2010. I'm excited to see a new, real contender, but at the same time it's a little frightening.
With Google, they have a log of much of my life for the past 5 years or so when I got Gmail (never delete anything, the box is so big!). They introduced a homepage that I stay logged into, which either does or can track my searches. They have free productivity software that I can save my files to and access anywhere (aka, the Cloud).
Having access to, or ability to access, this powerful information is something that always scared me about Microsoft, but now someone with even more potential to wrongfully use it has come out and gone further with it.
Anyway, that's my piece for now. What do you think?

I think it's interesting. But won't make me switch. The sole reason is that it'll be linux driven and my games don't run well on it. I'm pretty sure it'll be able to do most everyting else though.
Also....I stay away from all first versions of software. ESPECIALLY if they're an OS.

I think this is what open-source needs. Google has the name recognition and the knack for user-friendliness that Linux has always been struggling to build...they are set to become our cyber-overlords, sure, but they've done it much more smoothly and subtly than MS ever could have.
I have to be honest, I kind of like the idea of universal accessibility to everything. Yes, it is a privacy risk, but I don't think there is such a thing as true privacy. There's "privacy that no one's decided to intrude on yet", but really that's all. If you use the internet, your life is an open book that actually, very few people want to read.
I will be keeping an eye out...
ON a tangent, has anyone used an Android phone? They're out in Japan, and I am sorely tempted...

I do not think we have them in the states. I could be wrong though.
I am all for it. I hate the netbooks and will probably never own one, but a Kindle or Sony reader running that kind of software would be great.
I have always thought that if a program was good enough it should have its own OS to eliminate bugs and glitches.
AutoCad OS
PhotoShop OS
Adobe OS
You get the idea. Small machines dedicated to a sole function.

I think their move into Linux development is a big plus to open source and the Linux platform in general. A big company like that with the outlook and attitude of Google is just what Linux needs.
As for Google becoming our new galactic overlords. I like their policies far more than I do Microsoft's and think they can actually pull it off. They've managed to develop a high level of trust in general and as long as they maintain that they will go far.
Oh and Android is the operating system that is installed on the phone not the actual phone. I have a G1 and so does JMS. I love mine and from our discussions it seems JMS does too. The G1 was first generation but there are more phones in the pipe from other carriers (G1 is T-Mobile) so you will be seeing more options in the near future.
