I guess it is a good thing if they start recruiting non-smoking military personnel. People who do not smoke generally enjoy better physical fitness and condition. As the armed forces need the fittest they could use non-smoking as a recruiting criterion.
However, those employed now should not be forced to kick the habit.
A smoking President as Commander-in Chief of fumeless armed forces looks a bit funny though.Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr.

They got it backwards! they should encourange smoking. No...MANDATE smoking for all troops. At least a pack a day, starting the day you enlist. Then, the day before you deploy....they should yank your smokes. No more smokes until the enemy is dead or completely routed in some way.
How long do YOU think Al Queda would last going up against the US armed forces all simultaneoulsy going through those first 48 hours of nic-fits!

I understand the goal, but they need to let it happen as the society quits. Next, they'll ban cursing by the troops too.

Im all for it. That way the non smokers dont have to police call the cigarette butts that they didnt put on the ground. That was my biggest pet peeve when i was a junior enlisted. Especially when the smoker was too lazy to put the but in a butt can 2 feet from where the cigarette butt is laying on the ground!
