funny, I grew up around restaurants too, but by then it was customary 15%. I do 15-20%, even more if really great, especailly now with the kids knowing there is more mess. I have left as little as a penny for real crap service.

bathroom attendents, in the US which is the only place I've encountered them, irritate me to no end, I'd like to give every one of them a swirly. thanks for reminding me, my employer has these big all employee meetings at this one facility and they always have a men's restroom attendent when we're there. and just like you said, he takes the paper towels out and puts them on his little tray, with some other stuff.

I have been to a nice place before, with some nice rags that he was handing out, which means he was doing some serious laundry. still, I don't like them being in there. I'm emailing the planning committee for the staff day and telling them I'd like there not to be a bathroom attendent in there.

any time I have seen bathroom attendants the restrooms were markedly cleaner than without. so I personally don't mind tipping an attendant if it means a decent and clean restroom.

I never stay in a hotel long enough to require the need of a cleaning or turning of the sheets. Therefore I ask the concierge to put a "no clean" notice on my room and I place a "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door. That being said, I don't tip. No help there, sorry.

I don't ever recall being in a restroom with an attendant.

Waitress and waiter I always start off with 20% tip. If the service is terrible and I cannot see that they are slammed, under staffed then I reduce the tip automatically to 10%. And, it gets lower as the service gets worse. However, if I received service that is above and beyond than I will tip much higher than 20% if the service calls for it.

Thinking of tips... I just got some credits for replying to this thread so I'm gonna spend it on BlackJack.

In Australia it is customary not to tip, no one doe,s it and no one exspects it. You get paid to do the job just like every one else. So when my son was in America he got a hell of a lot of scowlling looks when he didn,t tip. The only times he did tip when over there was when the service was well above what would have been exspected in the normal course of duties.

I've never tipped hotel staff either... never even heard of it. Maybe Bellmen and the like, but I never stay at that type of hotel. Nicest I've really stayed at is Embassy Suite type places.

Bathroom attendants are a joke, and I'm never quite sure what they expect.

Restaurants for average "good" service I go with 20%. for mediocre/acceptable it's 15% if it's bad, the tip drops off very quickly. Minimum is 2 pennies (2 cents worth). Don't want the server to think you simply forgot!
I have tipped as much as something like 200% but that was a 3rd shift waitress who wasn't on hourly payroll yet (management couldn't be bothered), and was getting harrassed all night while trying to do her job properly. I usually go with a larger tip for 3rd shift wait staff knowing that they have a lot less income potential than 2nd shift people.
