Thanked: 41The people's stimulus package, or why did you come here?
So I have been a member of SRP since January. Not an Old timer but ....
So why did we all come here and sign up? Probably to learn. We accepted the generosity of the founders and owners of this site to provide us with FREE info. A secondary reason for many was to be part of a group of gentlemen and ladies who held dear the same values that we all share. So what are those values? I would hope that as members of SRP we can all be regarded as people who love the str8 razor experience. For whatever reason. I personally am attracted because of the history of the str8 razor shave and the simpleness and non commercial foundation of a time long forgotten by many.
So how about "THE PEOPLES STIMULUS PACKAGE"? What can we as members of SRP do to help our fellow members in these times of economic downturn. What can we do to encourage our fellows to take up the best darn shaving method around?
IMHO what we can do is adopt a PEOPLES STIMULUS PACKAGE for members of SRP. So what does that mean? If a fellow member in all honesty wants to explore the str8 razor shaving method but does not have the means to purchase the blade or the strop or the hones to sharpen the blade, then we as fellow members can give what extra we have to that member. The government, they say , "your government" has devised all kinds of stimulus packages that in fact will cost you, the tax payers many dollars. We, on the other hand can devise our own stimulus package, for our members in need, with no cost to the general membership. And how can that be done, you might ask? If every member who has an extra blade that he does not use or an extra stone that is sitting in the closet, lonely, or and extra strop that hasn't seen the sharp edge of a blade in 6 months, were willing to GIVE that extra piece of history to a deserving fellow member, free of cost, then we could enact our own Peoples, SRP, stimulus package. Yes, I am aware that many of you profit from sales of blades and strops and hones, and that is as it should be. But if you are not into selling your wares and instead have "stuff" that could benefit others in need, then I say lets start a grass roots movement, exclusive to the members of SRP, that benefits our members better than any government promoted stimulus package could. One drop in the ocean, may produce a tidal wave of good. And to those members who might receive such gifts, let it be known that when you are able you must repay this gift with a future gift to a new member who is in need. This can work. Many of us are already doing this behind the scenes. Lets make it a goal of our membership to assist those in need. We will be better for it.x10.

Thanked: 586Extra? What means extra? I have nothing extra. I have only thirty five or so razors. I know nothing about any extra. I have perhaps as many bottles of bay rums. Not one of them has any extra. I certainly would love to share some of my stuff with others but I have nothing extra.

Thanked: 416the people of this site have always been good about helping out the members who are less fortunate for what ever reason on there own. We also have a give away every month so I see no reason to set up any additional groups. Also remember before collecting goods on SRP for any reason it must be cleared and have the approval of the SRP moderators in advance.

I hear what you're saying, Mark. You appreciate all that you've learned and all that SRP offers AND you appreciate the caliber of SRP's membership. I feel the same way. Your appreciation moves you to actually want to give something back (which IMO attests to the caliber of YOUR character).
Like Doc said and what I've seen here, it happens more often that not that if someone asks for help in getting started out and they can't afford a razor, a member will donate a razor, barber hone, etc to that person.
People that ask for help from what I've seen get it here.

Here is a suggestion - on another forum a member wanted to help new straight users so he assumbled a list of interested members and sent one of his own straights with the provisions that the receiver would:
A) Try the straight for a period not to exceed one month; then
B) Would mail all of the hardware in the box to the next person on the list; the last person on the list would send it back to the originator; a copy of the list was included in the box;
C) The hardware would be sent to the next person on the list in equal condition to the condition in which it was recieved.
This way prospective straight shavers could preview the straight shaving method for no dollars down and only had to put hard earned dollars down if he decided he was truely interested.

Reminds me of the guys in the military wanting to bum a smoke, "You gotta extra smoke I can borrow?" No extras buddy and If I loan one to you are you gonna bring it back the same way I gave it?
Back on topic, as far as I can see, everyone here does a great job of helping others and the day that changes Im outta here!It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain

we've had several attempts at this over the years, but after every try the razor had to go back to the person lending it so that it gets rehoned, which i think is extremely important.
as far as i know none of these made more than three rounds which gets demotivating to those who try to help.
but there's nothing to do about this, so we can just continue to help people as we see fit and live with the fact that a lot of times the loaned items will never come back, especially when the recipient has nothing invested in it. with a give away it's somewhat similar in that there is the expecation the new person will actually use the stuff, but in about 60% of the cases I've done that I've never heard back from them so who knows....Last edited by gugi; 08-05-2009 at 08:15 PM.
