    Thumbs down

Is the razor still imbedded? If he did not at least remove it I'd get a second opinion.

hey, coincidence, I too made a bad step and twisted my ankle today... But I don't think I am for a doctor yet... Whenewer I twisted my ankle in the past, I always go to a neighbor of mine, Turkish guy, kiropractician (or whatewer is the woed) and he fixes it for me...

I'm not a doctor, but have dealt with sports injuries in the past as well as doing a little bodywork when my guys are banged up.

Since you've seen a doctor already, I'm going to assume it isn't broken but is sprained. I would begin by recommending the old standby: RICE -- Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. I know heat feels better, but you really want cold to reduce swelling and possible further soft tissue damage. You can alternate cold/hot treatments after about the first 24-36 hours. I like 20 minutes cold, 20 minutes off, 20 minutes heat, 20 minutes off, repeat. ACE bandage or athletic tape to provide extra support, as well as provide mild compression.

Combine with a NSAID (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug) of your choice -- ibuprofen works great for me.

My chiropractor tells me that sprains can take a long time to heal properly. Even once you're feeling better, take it easy for a couple of weeks after that.

Make sure you don't use supportive materials (tape etc) for too long though as this will weaken the muscles and therefor will prolong the recovery.

    Good luck

ps, if using tape/bandage, make sure you don't have it circular is it will cut off the bloodstream.

ok here is a little background. i play hockey, goalie...hurt it making a save.

this happened on friday, i waited a few days to see what happened as there was not much swelling, but pain when i moved it laterally.

there is pain on the OUTSIDE of my ankle...which is usually associated with a inversion of the ankle...ie. foot turned inward (most common sprain) BUT my foot turned the other way, eversion, which is usually associated with the ligaments on the INSIDE of the ankle being damaged.

so i go to see a "walk in" doc. he feels the area, and when i explain where and how the pain occurs he says he thinks it is a fracture, we take x-rays, he says he thinks he sees a hairline fracture on the fibula...which makes sense according to how i injured it. but he wants the radiologist to look at the x-rays to be sure. so i go home with an air-cast and wait for the next day...they never call, so i call them, and speak with a nurse who says x-rays were "regular" and that it is just a sprain...i am confused.

the doc thought it was a fracture because it was no condusive with a sprain...but now since its not a fracture it has to be a sprain? i feel like the diagnosis was half assed.

so i do some research to confirm what i thought.

    this is what i found.
Inversion injuries to the ankle cause lateral ligament damage.
Eversion injuries cause medial ligament damage.
Inversion is when the foot turns IN (this is the most common)
Eversion is when the foot turns outward (this is what i did)

BUT the pain i am experiencing is on the outside of my ankle, which would be the lateral ligaments, which occur from inversion, only i had an eversion injury...so it does not make sense that my ankle is sprained, the lateral ligaments would not be damaged from an Eversion injury.

so i think i might get a second opinion?

    does this all sound logical?

Sounds like a second opinion is definitely in order. Find a good orthopedic surgeon to visit and go from there.

You may be able to borrow your x-rays and have another radiologist look at it. Costs me less than $20, so it should be less than $50 for you. The radiologist may have missed something and the md might have just deferred to the radiologist (because they have the extra training).

Either way, get your x-rays, it will save you time and trouble for your second opinion.

    BTW, your rational is logical.

Hockey Goalie?? Yikes, I thought you guys were imune to pain. Put a wooden stick between your teeth, put a 70 pound pack on your back and walk it off

Just kidding of course. I did the ankle thing in early spring and thought it would never heal.

    Get the second opinion, really.
