Another Dick Nixon legacy, taking us off of the gold standard, we should go back to it as well as find our own energy replacements, if there is any gold left and then the petro dollar go screw itself, as individual Americans cheat the "system' that is enslaving us to the oil and bank men.
As far as energy independence goes, it will have to come from individuals, as long as we are willing to wait for the govt or established industry to do something there will be a long wait, there is too much control and profit to change things now. Oops there already has been a long wait, and where are we as compared to 1973. Falling dollar, rising unemployment and inflation and the oil companies are kicking our asses. Deja vue all over again. It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain

We have tons of oil in our own country. Why not drill for that? Canada uses capitalism in the form of drilling for oil and selling it to subsidize their socialized medicine. Not a great scheme but a better scheme than borrowing from China to pay for it, Or taxing citizens into poverty to support it.

I think it was because ME oil was cheaper to drill for than oil in the US. It didn't make economic sense to dril on US soil outside of the oilfields that were easily accessible, like those in texas.
That's also the reason that shale oil did not become economically viable. The cost was bigger than the current price of oil per barrel -> no profit -> no investement.
As soon as that threshold is reached, US oil and shale oil become interesting again from a price pov.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

It is a complex issue. Oil is fine once refined. We haven't built new refineries in decades or upgraded those we have.
Wasn't it a wakeup call when we found out that a hurricane could cripple the oil distribution in the southeast part of the country ? AFAIK that has been forgotten in terms of doing anything to harden those assets.
Look at New Orleans, whether they rebuild the low lying areas or not the levies are still vulnerable to another possible storm as are others all over the country.
In a 1972 issue of The Ironworker magazine, a trade journal for union members. there was a big article on America's crumbling bridges. We band aid stuff until something like the bridge failure in Minneapolis and then it is on the agenda again for a news cycle or two.
If we would have listened to Mark's favorite President, Jimmy Carter, thirty years ago we wouldn't be dependent on foreign oil now. End of rambling half off topic rant.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Imagine how awesome this country would be if, historically, people just emigrated instead of trying to correct things.
I would offer an equally-sarcastic link for flights to countries that only offer corporate health care, but unfortunately the United States is the only industrialized nation with it.
