Charities?
I work for the Red Cross, so I am kind of interested in charities. Judging by the poles many of you are too. Americans give a lot of money to them each year. Anyway, do you guys have any favorites? What about ones you don't like for some poor experience?
Just curious.

I've always given to the ones I halfway anticipate needing someday. Several problems are in my family, so I like the American Cancer Society, Kidney Foundation, Heart Association, and then there's always the Red Cross. Everybody's perennial favorite. They make it real easy for us gov types to donate, payroll deduction!

Well with the New Orleans situation the Red Cross got my money. I think that giving to others in need is really a great gift to yourself. It makes me feel more like a person.

Rich,
I agree it makes me feel more human as well.
I have had teh opportunity to see the Red Cros $ put to work. We are housing over 1500 people in Columbus, Ohio of all places. Most arrived with NOTHING! I watched kids 10 and 11 years old getting vaccinated for the very first time. What a blessing that we can help!

I give blood and donate my time where I can. My wife does fundraisers with her students at her school and I will donate through programs at work where my company will match the donation. It's just something that you do, not out of any sense of obligation or moral duty or anything like that. No, I do this simply because it's the right thing to do.

Fund Raiser
I'm a straving artist, but although there isn't a lot of cash in the bank I have a day jod that lets me make a difference calling people on the phone to raise money and helps pay the bills. Most are Canadian ... The Council of Canadians, The David Suzuki Foundation, Sierra Legal Defense Fund, etc.
I have raised funds for Public Television and Radio in the Northeast and the Midwest US, but one of the biggest programs we call is The Humane Society of the United States. Animal lovers are great people to talk to. Very compassionate.

For me it's Covenant House (homeless kids), the local food bank, PVA (paralyzed veterans of America), and the church. Paid monthly, I treat them the same as the mortgage and utilities.
