Diversions of the barbeque type
Normally this time of year my weekends are spent deer hunting, but another commitment today kept me out of the woods this weekend.
Anyway, I decided to pop down to Lynchburg yesterday to poke around the Jack Daniel's World Championship Invitational Barbecue competition.
These teams are the best of the best, in order to gain entry they must have already won a competition in which 50 or more teams participated, such as the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Barbecue, Memphis in May, the open division of the American Royal Barbecue in Kansas City, or won a "state championship". Even then a lottery is held to select the final competitors.
This year there were 63 Domestic Invitational teams, 18 International teams, and 36 teams competing in the Shade Tree amateur.
The fun is in the sampling. While you can purchase a full meal from vendors, the competitors are happy and very willing to set out samples. You can nibble your way through the event.
A good time. Unfortunately, Moore County, where the distillery is located, is a dry county
The first photo is the Jack Daniel's "Official" smoker.
The second is a John Deere powered ice cream maker. I talked to the guy for quite a while. The engine was made in 1927 and is a 1904 design. The whole thing was built by the Amish.
The third is a JD Harley.
