This is incorrect. Mutation is a mechanism of evolution, but not necessarily a primary force. Genetic pressure is a much more common mechanism. Take the giraffe. It was originally a horse like creature, which is found and clearly traced to the modern giraffe in the fossil record. The horse like giraffes with the longer necks had an advantage over the shorter necked ones, they were able to get more food. More food, the giraffe lives longer, is healthier, and has more offspring with the genetic trait for a longer neck. The cycle continues over million of years until you have the modern day giraffe. This happened without mutation or the introduction of foreign genetic materiel, but with the genetic diversity caused by sexual reproduction and pressure by the environment.
