Perhaps. But through Jesus, God also establishes a new covenant with mankind, doesn't he?

Well depending on what part of which epistle you read it seems so but there is a list of offenses that are common to many people whatever their religious persuasion that Paul and other apostles say will exclude them from 'inheriting the kingdom of God'. Reading 1Corinthians 6:9 I wonder if the new covenant applies ?

I completely agree agree that most people including clergy use the buffet approach to the Bible. I take the Bible as a whole personally. But, if you have only read a protestant Bible, then you have always taken the Bible as a partial. I have read the non-canonical books as well as the Gnostic gospels, and there is much left out if you have not read them. Based on just this verse you should say that all Christians be Jewish in practice which was the case in early Christianity. Jesus may have spoken Hebrew in addition to Aramaic and may other languages, but the statement that Jesus was "Hebrew" is not something that can be pinned down by fact. He was Jewish though.
Jesus was the fulfiller of the law. He went against certain Levitican laws a pertaining to diet and also criticized the Pharisees for their rituals and lack of a true heart in service to God (hence Jesus performing miracles on the Sabbath). One hard examples is Luke 6. Such is the case that Jews never accepted him because they could not believe that anyone could criticize them or "their law" and be the Messiah among many other reasons. A Christian by definition is a follower of Christ and Christ was the fulfiller of the law.
All I know is I don't live by the Levitican Laws because I love pork ribs, shrimp, and other "crawling split hoofed" animals. I also do not, nor would I sacrifice my child or another animal because Jesus was the "living sacrifice". I will definitely need forgiveness and have to sacrifice something (other than a tithe) if I am held to that standard. I will definitely have to give up some razors!

Full disclosure, I have been a non believer, a believer and have come to be an agnostic. By that I mean that I don't know what I do or don't believe at present but I remain open minded.

I have read some of, but not all of, the Gnostic gospels in seeking to know the truth. I've read many sermons by great preachers and bible expositors as well as commentaries. I take this subject very seriously and my contributions to this thread are not meant to be flippant or disrespectful of anyone's beliefs.

I believe Jesus was speaking about himself, the law was fulfilled in his perfect life which made him the ideal redeemer of mankind at his crucifixion/resurrection. As John the baptist said," Behold the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world". Imperfect man could never uphold the law, Jesus did it for us, imperfect man could never atone for his sin, once again Jesus stepped in to fill the void. Hence the scripture, "All things are impossible to man, nothing is impossible to God."


His blood and body, his sacrifice given freely for you is the new covenant. Do you become perfect once you sign on? No, but God is willing to see you as a work in progress. Jesus stands at the right hand of the father day and night interceding on our behalf.

Bigspendur nailed it. All the religious hocus pocus in the world is not going to end the world prior to another ice age or meteoric hailstorm. Of course, the religious fanatics would attribute either of those things to prophesy, so it's a lose/lose as usual. End of discussion.

As for the Christians in government, imagine if it was the Jews who "founded" this country. Christians everywhere would be screaming bloody murder if somebody suggested that the Torah be read in the classroom. The hypocrisy continues.

Freedom from religion, please. I think it's a fair request.

At least the Christians have given you room to live the life you choose, we should take a moment and thank those old dead white guys for getting the freedom ball rolling.
