Wine!
Well, theres been the thread about beef and another about cheese, but we seem to have forgotten the most important companion to them, namely wine!
I've done a poll, so please submit to that and once you have tell us which are your favouorite wines and why?
I must admit I like all sorts!
Red's, I'd have to go for Barolo, Amarone, Rioja, malbec, pinot noir... The list goes on! I love red wine, definately my favourite!
White, I like Sauvignon blanc, sancerre and riesling. Anything really crisp is good, but I dont like the sweet fruity ones so much.
Rose is good in summer but I dont really drink that much.
Bubbles, its got to be Pol Roger. Far and away one of the best Champagnes in the world! Or Salon, if someone else is paying..!:-) I also love cava and prosecco.
So poll and let us know which wines you like and why!Last edited by Stubear; 12-08-2009 at 03:46 PM.

Well I'd say that I've enjoyed most of the wines I've had. My favorites are definitely the reds; rioja, navarra, chianti and malbec top the list.
For whites I've really like vinho verde and gewurztraminer. Bubbly would be cava or prosecco. Tawny port is wonderful, although I honestly think that's the only port I've had.

I see you like your reds full bodied, as I do. I'd also have to add Syrah/Shiraz, Petite Sirah, Petit Verdot.
I'm not big into sparkling wines, but I read recently that Sainsbury's own is the undisputed best Champagne this year!

Think it may have been wordplay: children "whine"
You guys spell it differently - does the pronunciation follow suit?
Red all the way, here. In fact, I just put in an order for ten liters of a local red I tried the other day. It's from a little vineyard, and the guy downstairs knows the owner. Fantastic stuff that should run about $8.00 total.Last edited by northpaw; 12-08-2009 at 04:17 PM.

There are two varieties, sub-10 years old:
Male -- extremely challenging whine. Can sound a little girly if very upset, but usually resolved with a clip round the ear.
Female -- annoying, but strangely compelling whine. Tugs at heartstrings and results in unexplained desire to buy a pony for them.
Neither are better, and both can be put in a cellar for years (if grown in Austria).
(Ouch.)

I mainly prefer red wines: spanish wines because of the tempranillo grape, italian wines as long as there's nebbiolo in it, old Bourgognes (can't swallow it young), South African wines, .... I recently developed a thing for the French appellation "Irouléguy".
White wines: as long as it's not too sweet (exception to the rule: Hungarian Tokaji wines, verrrry sweet but incredibly good). Champagne, of course !!

I don't drink wine. There is something in nearl all wines I've ever tried that makes me feel really dizzy the day after. Even 1 glass of wine has a serious after effect.
Th ebest thing to do with wine is to boil / distill it, and put the result in a barrel for the next 30 years or so. I really love high quality old cognac. It's like summer sunshine in a glassTil shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.
To spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the Last Day
