    Default Backgammon

    My dear Doc,

Did you say backgammon? Oh, dear, dear. I grew up playing backgammon. My uncles, brother, everybody in my clan played backgammon. Some of those gentlemen were champion players, certainly far better players than I, even though I managed relatively well.

I even wrote a short story titled "Backgammon." The story is in the Zinda Magazine (zindamagazine.com) archives (the magazine no longer publishes) under my column "Musing With My Samovar." The story was published in the magazine on February 4, 2008, under my full name — Obelit Yadgar.

Anyway, my dear Doc, you surprise me more and more everyday. You once started a thread on the glorious hot dog. The Chicago-style hot dog is food for the gods. Now backgammon. Well done, sir.

Backgammon dates back 5,000 years to ancient Sumer in Medopotamia. My ancestors, the Assyrians of the Assyrian empire, played it. The game was perfected by the Persians, though, during the Sassanian dynasty.

A great place to purchase ornate backgammon sets is at orientals.com. They even have a 15% sale going right now. You can get backgammon sets also at gammonvillage.com, The Backgammon Store, and Heirloom Gift Bazaar. I would start with orientals.com; they have beautiful backgammon sets.

    Regards,

    Obie

Try Backgammon and Board Games Shop. Specialist global supplier, backgammon sets, backgammon boards, software, game set and gaming items. (look in right panel)

And here's a nice collection of links

    Chicago Point Online Backgammon Links

Good luck. Also, if you don't have GNU Backgammon, download it. It's free and very good.

I've played the game but not in years.

I bet Brad, aka Icedog would make a fantastic backgammon board. His woodworking skills are admirable.
