    Default USA Vehicle registration

I'm hoping some one will be able to help me here.

Basically, I have every intention of going to the states next year, buying a motorcycle and riding about for a couple of months.

I have a full UK license, insurance is obtainable, the only kicker seems to be that most states require a permanent address in order to register the vehicle. Some states, how ever, will accept a temporary address or a PO box address.

Does any one know which ones?

    Thanks,
    Greg

Don't know that you will be able to get much help on this question here. I would suggest writing to the American Embassy in the UK and see if they can help or suggest an alternative. MAy take a while since you will be dealing with a government office but I think this would be your best bet. That, or bring the bike with you registered in the UK. Lastly, rent one.

I hadn't thought about doing that.

    Can't afford to rent.

It's worth an ask, some one might know something useful.

You might also want to talk to the British embassy in the USA too. If you're legal, it should be no problem getting a license in most states.

    Greg,

Yet another option is to contact via a web search for the various states' departments of transportation, public safety, and/or vehicle and driver services where you plan to travel to ask of them this same question. Likely you would receive the best information from them as they are the ones doing the registration and licensing.

    good luck,

I have to say, finding the exact information is quite difficult. I think maybe I will contact the washington department of transport and see what the deal is. That's where I intend to start.

A little digging has turned up that South Dakota, Texas, Florida and Montana accept Private Mail boxes as legal address.

Gentlemen, it appears we are golden. I was worried for a second there.

    Hope it turns out ok!
After dealing with the DMV over here I wouldn't get my hopes too high, they can be very difficult if they want. Are you going to be here on a tourist visa or something more permanent? Are you going to get a drivers license?

Tourist. No, i can use mine for 12 months.

I've been speaking to a mail forwarding company set up to deal with people in exactly my position, and US citizens who travel full time in an RV or what ever and don't have a permanent address.

It shouldn't be a problem, that's what they do.
