I've said it before and I'll say it again: College Football Needs a playoff system
Its time to beat that old dead horse again. It maybe dead, but I'm going to beat it until College football gets playoff system. Most every other sport has a playoff system. All the other divisions of College football have playoff systems. Even highschool football has playoffs. Why not College football. How many Undefeated teams not making the Championship game does it take? How many situations like what happened with Oklahoma and Texas(Oklahoma going to the Championship even though Texas beat them) does it take? The BCS is just BS. It is clearly unfair. Teams outside of the big 6 conferences don't have a chance to compete for a National Championship. I have a question for all those that don't think College football should have a playoff system, Should the NFL get rid of theirs and just let polls and computers decide who plays in the Superbowl? In 2007, when the Pats went undefeated in the regular season, should it have just been the Pats verses the Colts in the Superbowl and forget about the Giants(who beat them in the Superbowl) and the rest of the playoffs? I'd be very upset if Baseball did this. The Phillies probably wouldn't have made the World Series either this year or last. Anyone who is in favor of the BCS, please tell why/how you think it is fair to have over 100 teams play 12 games and elimination all but 2 teams afterwords? How can you possibly think that such a system can be anywhere near accurate at deciding who the 2 best teams are? It is past time to get rid of the BCS and go with a playoff system.
mods: is there anyway I can add a poll to this thread? I meant too, but I forgot.Last edited by Warbler; 12-14-2009 at 07:38 PM.

Thanked: 2591problem with playoff is for fans following if their team keeps winning. that is a lot of money to go all over the country to support.
may be 1-4 play each other to decide who plays in the NC game.Stefan

how we are not worried about the fans of Division 1AA having to pay to go all around the country to support their teams? What about fans of NFL teams or other sports?
As for what format. I think it should be a 16 team playoff system. Perhaps decide the teams via Conference champions and committee, like they do in College basketball. Or, we could use a formula much like the BCS and take the top 16 teams instead of just the top 2.

Thanked: 2591if you watch an NFL game how many fans of the guest team are there at the game? only the die hard ones. we are talking college student fans here they can't afford to travel as some of the alumni can. as far as D1-AA I am not sure they get a big following either.
As far as 16 team play off, the only way this works is if they throw out all the bcs type of voting and go by record only. However can you justify a team that plays 2 fcr opponets and has 2 loses go to a play off before a team that plays only FBS opponents and has 3 losses?
Also the teams that are #17 and up will still complain.
The whole thing is so messed up I am not even sure how it can be fixed.Stefan

I disagree the BCS can work if you give it a margin of error.
for the fan expense thing, if they can't afford to go too bad. Someone will buy their ticket and they can watch their team on tv. I'm sure fans of TCU, Boise State, and Cincinnati would rather have to worry of the expense of getting to all the games than seeing their teams eliminated from championship contention even though they won all their games. Why is this not a problem for College Basketball fans?
edit: there is a big difference between a 17th ranked team who probably lost 3 or more games complaining and a 3rd, 4th, or 5th ranked undefeated team complaining? I think the 3rd, 4th, and 5th ranked undefeated teams can make a little better argument that they got jacked, don't you?Last edited by Warbler; 12-14-2009 at 10:26 PM.

Thanked: 335I think it would help tremendously if we played all sports all year long. And play-offs are a wonderful idea - we'd just have to squeeze them in on Wednesdays.

16-teams is way too many IMO. I say the plus-one is sufficient where this year the winner of Texas/Alabama would play the winner of TCU/Boise to determine the champion. Sorry, Cinci.
Adding 4 more games to any D1 schedule is pretty rough because then you're looking at an NFL season. D2 can get away with it because, generally, the talent level isn't as high and very few of those guys are playing for a job in the NFL. More games means higher injury risk, and there are plenty of potential NFL players on the top 16 college teams.
