How to Raise Money for Haiti In a College Town
So last semester our Student Association President (named Drew) opened up Starkville's first cigar/smoking shop. He is quite the entrepreneur and a very good guy. This was very convenient because we used to have to drive 30 minutes to the town over just to pick up a cigar. His shop is downtown and right next door to the three most frequented bars in town. Well Drew wanted to have a fund raiser for Haiti, but didn't like just asking people to throw money in a box to give to Red Cross. So instead of asking for donations from a bunch of poor college students, he had a sort of "party" last Thursday night. A vendor had 1000 slightly dried (but still good) cigars which were donated to Drew and and handed out for free. Drew had some Cuban cigar rollers come to the store and roll cigars for people. Also a pipe company came to showcase their goods and sell what they could. If you purchased or donated any money at all (and were 21) you were given a wrist band for 50% off all drinks at the three bars the rest of the night. I don't know exactly how much of the money went to the Red Cross, but I actually think it was all of the money spent that night.
In my opinion it's things like this that really get the relief money rolling in. It's a lot more efficient than just asking people to donate to a good cause. I thought this was rather valiant and figured I should share this little tale.
Hope you all have a great evening,
Brent

Cool idea and a worthy cause.
Is that the same Starkville of the Johnny Cash song Starkville City Jail?
