Sure it works. It conditions well and holds well too without being stiff like modern gels and such. Of course it is oily and that's not the style for most modern gents. As they used to say in the seventies (mercy me, am I really that old?) "The wet head is dead".

It's only a bad thing when the hair and scalp don't get cleaned. But yes pomade works. So can Vasaline. I've been doing Hair for half of my life, and I've used, and tried almost everything. In fact, you might be surprised how well Shaving cream works with mens hair. It keeps the hair matte and malleable. Great for photo work. Just remember to wash the hair and scalp out well.

Growing up the barber used to put shaving cream in our hair so he could cut us a flat top. Worked well to make it stick up with out the hardness of gel.

Thanks for the replies. It seems to be a good choice, I just wondered if it would leave greasy marks on couches or car headrests? It seems that it would. Using gel makes your hair look greasy anyway. I think I will give it a try.
