My attitude to advertising is similar to what detroyt and some others have said. It certainly can make me aware of products and services that I might want, but I tend to be frugal, er maybe stingy is a better way of putting it, and obviously some of my tastes are well out of the mainstream. So--I don't buy a whole lot by American standards; I usually research things and don't do much impulse buying; and a fair amount of what I do buy, I learn about by word of mouth or through forums such as this one. And it does help that my family and I watch next to no TV.
We got on a calling list somewhere for focus groups, and I would have been happy to earn forty bucks to sit in a room for an hour or two talking about toothpaste, but every time they'd call me, the person would ask a few questions and tell me sorry, I didn't fit the profile they were looking for. Eventually they stopped calling.
Basically, most advertisers hate me and wish I would go ahead and die, and make room for somebody normal.

Thanked: 3164If only there were aliens studying you, Stubear, what would they think?! What inferences would they draw from you picking up your guitar and going for it every twenty minutes or so - some form of arcane communication with or act of devotion to the god of the telly?
That made me smile, thanks!

Thanked: 227I ashamedly didn't read the whole thread but I'm sick so forgive me lol.
I no longer have a TV, I got sick of repeats and adverts irritate me, I'm 26 and to be honest even when I did have a TV I really didn't pay too much mind to adverts, I tend not to buy a lot, really most of my expenditure goes on shaving stuff or computer stuff, and with both it's only what I like or need, and especially in the case of computer stuff I research it quite thoroughly before I buy it and I buy the best of the type of thing for the fewest pennies I can spend.
When it comes to clothes especially jeans and shirts I tend to buy cheap comfy stuff, the only place I really spend is on suits, and that's only because Daniel Hechter suits are the best fitting suits I ever bought, and also good quality.

Thanked: 11I like adds if they are funny or clever, i never judge a product based on how good the adds are. Like adds may make me think of something i might need, then ill go off to the internet and spend a few weeks reading about it and assessing it before i buy it.

Thanked: 14I buy based on benefit of the product to me, quality and value, the only thing advertising does is alert me to a product I didn't know about.
Also, if I think the ad is stupid or annoying, I boycott that product. I haven't drunk Coca Cola for over five years for that reason.
