Never attempted the whole thing but the trail through the Great Smokey Mountains Nat. Park is great. There use to be a place called Mountain Mama's near waterville N.C. where hikers could stop for supplies camp for the night get a shower etc.. Last time I was up that way ('08) sadly it had closed. The trail does give one a chance to really see wilderness in all it's beauty. If they enjoy the outdoors they should love it. If they are in E.TN the highs in the the upper elevations of the park are suppose to be in the upper 40's to low 50's today. It will get cold at night and there is a chance of rain the next 4 days with the best chance Thursday.
This picture is from Mt.LeConte but there are alot of views like this up there.

When hiking Mt. Katahdin (the AT terminus) a few years ago, I met a guy who had just finished the whole trail and I gave him a lift to Millinocket. He was genuinely happy about his accomplishment and said that one of the toughest moments were the bugs in NH and Maine. His favorite part were probably the White Mountains in NH, quite understandably .

I only touched bits of it in Northern New Jersey.
The trail could be narrow and hard to find or wide
as a highway -- do they have a GPS or map skills.
A couple of friends and cell phones -- they should be good
to go as long as they know to keep dry , dress in layers
and keep their feet clean and dry.
Make sure you know what shoe and sock size
so you can send spares.
I do recommend foot powder. Talc can keep the blisters
at bay....
