My cousin in Serbia who took a year or two of civ.eng., changed his major to comp.sci., and is now working as a sales manager for an RE developer (ironic, eh?) was shocked when he saw how we build houses here in North America. Both Canada and California have good reasons for such construction:
Canada: So we only pay $200 a month for heating instead of $800.
California: In case of an earthquake, I'd rather have a ton of plywood instead of 5 tons of bricks falling on me
P.S. The house is shaping up nicely Bill. Are you gonna go with wood, brick or stucco?Last edited by FiReSTaRT; 05-02-2006 at 11:31 AM. Reason: added a p.s.

Thanked: 0Great looking house Bill, The construction style is much different from what we generally use here in Australia Obviously this construction method is desgined to be cost effective and yet still provide adequate strength. I found the design and construction of the scaffolding interesting, is this standard scaffolding practice in the U.S?
Keep posting on the progress of the house.

Thanked: 1Done
For all practical purposes, the house is done. We went on the walk-through today. There aren't many things the contractor will have to fix. The biggest flaw being a 1/2 inch reveal on the grout next to the whirlpool tub in the upstairs bathroom. They will only have to replace 5 floor tile. Finished living area, which does not include the garages, is 2,898 square feet and a Honda Ridgeline shy of half a mil. I'll post pics of the workshop as it blooms.

Wow, the house looks great, and the photographer did his job well, too Bill, good luck in your new home, and many razors and knifes built in that workshop...

Good looking house Bill. Looks like they did a great job. I really like the stone work around the front door.
