Question Pass some work my way please?

Hey folks, I'm trying all avenues of networking so I figured I'd try this place also.

I've been unemployed/self-employed for over 4 years now. During that time I finished my bachelors degree and started my own business after I couldn't find any companies willing to give an american citizen a chance in the IT field.

I'm looking for decent work in a decent area. Unemployment rate countywide is reported at just under 12% here and the local big companies (b*** buy, etc) are undercutting my repair costs with long going "specials" meant to drive myself and others like me out of business. They're doing a pretty good job too. I'm willing to travel to most any state, relocate to some states, and even travel over seas to most countries for reasonable periods of time.

If any of your companies are looking for hard working americans I'd love to hear about the job opportunity. I thought I'd be able to tough out the current drout of work by travelling for small contracts but that kind of work is fast disappearing.

I overheard my children discussing my work situation today. Seems like they've been listening to my F.I.L. talk to his brother about me. They think that since Bush is touting how well the economy is doing that I should be able to get decent work. I'm no longer eligible to try to get back into the military, the few government jobs that I'm receiving offers on want to send me to Iraq and Afganistan and my wife doesn't want that. So now I'm the talk of not only the FIL but the children also. Such is the penalty of living with him I guess.

I don't want to paint a sob story. Please forgive me if it seems that way. I seem to be getting enough here and there to pay the bills most of the time and on occasion splurge on something for the family/birthdays/etc. and occasionally on myself. Every great once in a while I'll get enough to get something big that we need but I'm not getting the contracts to replinish the emergency reserve I once had and some times I get pretty worried about where the money for next month's bills is coming from.

Seriously folks. If any of you work for a good company, large or small, that might have contract work or even a permanent job, I'm a hard worker and love to learn new IT technologies and I'd appreciate a heads up so I can send in a resume or bid on a job.

Thanks for listening. Hope I didn't offend anyone.

    Glen,

I don't know where you are located, or maybe have forgotten, but here is a thought. I work for Larry H. Miller at one of his Honda stores. Larry now has around 40 stores, with a huge intranet. I have no idea if ther are hiring in that department, but in reality, check in your area for local dealers who are expanding. Once a dealer has two stores or more stores, they need an IT person. Just a thought, and I wish you well!

    Fud,

I should have given a bit more information. Check here. This link will take you to the 'emipire'. Larry owns the Utah Jazz, movie theaters, restaurants...a lot of stuff! Best of luck!

Glen you mention being ex-military. Have you considered civil service? If you served during any of the campaigns, you will receive a 5 point veterans preference over non-vet applicants. More than that with a service related disability. There are thousands of jobs in the Department of Defense. http://opm.gov/ There's always the USPS too. Very popular with ex-vets, and a damn good place to work. It may not be IT, but the pay is decent, and good benefits as well.

I used to work for the federal govt and most agencies use private contractors to do their IT work. Mine used a company named genicom to do network maint and the like you might contact them on the web.

I've checked civil service. They won't hire me at the post office. Lumbar Spine injury. I can walk and do most things that most people can but I can't take on a job walking a delivery route, 2 disks grinding against each other. While I disregard this a lot of times, civil service won't, and you're right, they use contractors to do a lot of their IT, even the contractor companies ask questions and balk at the lumbar spine. The ones I CAN get into are wanting to send me to Iraq and Afganistan, and the wife says NO to that.

I'll check out the motorola link. I've submitted a resume with them before, back when I was finishing up my degree. I'll try again.

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

    FUD,

I work for the government now. I did a quick search for IT on http://usajobs.opm.gov/ and the site listed some 20 pages of IT specialist jobs. You'll have to check them to see what you're qualified for and they should tell you if they're Emergency Essential (the one's who get shipped off to the Middle East; you can skip those ). Just click "Search Jobs" and search for IT. Remember like Jeff said when you get to "applicant eligibility", hit "yes" because you have military service. PLUS the government will count your military service for leave purposes as soon as you start and towards retirement if you "buy it back". That's for another post, though, if you find something on that site you like.

Otherwise, I used to work for Electric Boat in Groton, CT. They hire their IT work out to a company call Computer Services Corporation (CSC). I don't have a link.

I will gladly accept and submit your resume. My company prefers to hire those with military experience and those with diverse issues like yours. We only hire those who are endorsed by another employee. If your interested in working for a private company working for the government as an IT consultant feel free to email me at the email that I will PM to you.
