    Default Sudoku, anyone?

I was pondering something mentioned in a thread earlier, where it was suggested that because a person couldn't do a "sudoku" puzzle, it somehow made them less intelligent. I thought that was a pretty benighted statement, both demeaning and haughty. My first reaction was that most people don't do them because they have jobs, but then realized the counterargument was just as demeaning and haughty. Anyway, while I was driving home from work, I was listening to public radio, which broadcasts BBC America after 10PM, and they had a pretty interesting story concerning so-called brain training puzzles, which basically stated they don't make you smarter; they just make you better at doing those puzzles. Their study indicated taking a walk did more for you than the puzzles, and since I need all the help I can get, I think me and my longsuffering dog will do just that

Brain games don't make you smarter: study

Meh. I sometimes do brain puzzles when I am traveling, just to pass the time. The main reason I don't like sudoku is because I don't see the point of solving the same puzzle again and again for different number sets.

Personally I think that learning Japanese is much more beneficial for my brain. But even if it wouldn't be, learning Japanese is something I find interesting whereas I think sudoku are boring.

I tried em a couple of time.....I just don't like most brain teasers. One of the few "dopey" games I like is Desktop Defender (just google it, there's millions of versions of it).

And yeah, it makes you better at IT through time, not at anything else.

It takes reasoning and logic to solve Sudoku puzzles. Not for everybody.

You guys will be sorry the day that someone steals all of your shaving gear and leaves you a 9x9 Sudoku puzzle to solve in order to get them back!

I like brain teasers but never got into Sudoku. I do love the Professor Layton series on the DS -- much more fun and interesting than Brain Age.

I think a walk sounds much better but then again I also never got into videogames. I think switching off your brain as in a walk, concentrating on your breathing etc is ironically going to be much more beneficial than engaging the left side of it.

No, it takes a certain kind of thinker. Not for everyone. There's different styles of problem solving. And some kinds lend itself to sudoku style puzzles. Other kinds don't.

Hate 'em. Can't solve 'em unless all but one of the numbers is filled in.

I think the problem for me is they are logic based, but LX might be right, might be something else entirely.

I think the average person finds them difficult or boring because they don't have any bias or emotion to grab onto. It's not a "coffee in the lap" kind of a problem. Certainly, repeatitive.

    Sorry I offended you.

I don't mind having to apply logic and reasoning (I am an Engineer) but I find them just boring after having done one.
