My daughter the running champ, 2010
A week ago, it was that time of the year again: the annual 'KriebelCross'. This is a competition between children of the various schools in our vicinity. Kids are grouped per birth year, and have to run a certain distance.
In 2008, my daughter Kato won first price. In 2009 she was second. Not because she wasn't the fastest, but because she stopped 1 meter before the finish line to look back
Still, she got in second.
This year we had told her to keep on running until she was across the finish line. the distance this year was 100 meters, with a curve in the middle. I heard that other moms told their daughter beforehand to 'just chase Kato' if they wanted a medal.
. At the starting signal, she got delayed because the rope holding them back got lifted later in the middle than at the sides of the field, so she started in the middle of the pack. She quickly picked up her pace and like a pro she picked her way through the pack of non-hopers 
and shot like an arrow through the inside of the curve to make up for the lost time.
At that point she was 4th or 5th and I lost sight as the turned left on the field. I didn't expect her to make up 20 meters but figured she'd end up on the podium. My brother was watching at the finish. He said that as she cleared the corner, she took off like road runner and crushed the competition. She was still looking sideways to see if the other girls were catching up but at least she kept on running and ended 1st with a comfortable margin. I sure was proud.
My youngest daughter also competed for the first time. She ended up in the middle of the pack, as we had expected. At first she didn't even want to start but after my wife promised her an ice cream she made her way to the finish. My youngest has many talents, but athletics and a competitive streak are not among them.

Were the prizes Lego sets and backpacks?

1st and second got a backpack. 3d got a marble maze.
Afterward, everybody got a plastic bag with a small lego set, a ball, some vouchers, and other stuff from sponsors.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.
