Not everyone has the brains to shave themselves with a Straight Razor, and the same is for firearms. Guns are a very serious tool. They are designed for one thing only, and not everyone should have one. Heavy responsibilities come with gun ownership as we all should know. May all of us gun carriers never need to use them, ever. Stay Safe.

    G'day, all
here in the great down under the federal government has had several goes at further restricting private fire arm ownership. By the way you cannot state self defense as a reason for owning a firearm here. Only recently the Western Australian govt further tightened regulations, one prize one being that firearms held for hunting now have to be re justified every five years (hand guns every year and club membership is mandatory} My guess is in another twenty years of so our nanny state will have surpassed Great Britain, and I doubt we will be able to have much more than a small bow and a couple of arrows.
About the only thing I do agree with is the implementation of better home storage, but even then it is not rare to have them knocked of by crims.
There is no answer that I can see to this endless do gooderism. I am please to say the pro gun mob are getting much more organised about defending out firearm priviledges as against the rights you blokes have written into your constitution.
Keep yo hoss well shod an yo powdah dry !

I have no doubt that by the time you're near where we are now, we'll have moved on some more...!

By that time all people will be allowed is a chicken on a spring and a stick. Not a sharp stick mind you, because that would be dangerous...

And all our food will come pre sliced, like we're all three years old, so that there is no reason for anyone to own a knife. Cricket, baseball, rounders, hockey and others will be illegal because those big heavy sticks are just plain lethal and we'll have a bloke with a red flag walking along in front of our carbon neutral, ethically produced electric cars.

    And I'm only half joking!

If I have a guy walking in front of my car, all I have to say is I hope he's a fast runner..!

And now for a slightly lighter note....and a little laugh in the debate:

Been away for a couple days. This is kind of interesting in relation to the above:

AUSTRALIA: MORE VIOLENT CRIME DESPITE GUN BAN
It is a common fantasy that gun bans make society safer. In 2002 -- five years after enacting its gun ban -- the Australian Bureau of Criminology acknowledged there is no correlation between gun control and the use of firearms in violent crime. In fact, the percent of murders committed with a firearm was the highest it had ever been in 2006 (16.3 percent), says the D.C. Examiner.

Even Australia's Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research acknowledges that the gun ban had no significant impact on the amount of gun-involved crime:In 2006, assault rose 49.2 percent and robbery 6.2 percent. Sexual assault Australia's equivalent term for rape -- increased 29.9 percent.Overall, Australia's violent crime rate rose 42.2 percent. Moreover, Australia and the United States -- where no gun-ban exists -- both experienced similar decreases in murder rates:Between 1995 and 2007, Australia saw a 31.9 percent decrease; without a gun ban, America's rate dropped 31.7 percent. During the same time period, all other violent crime indices increased in Australia: assault rose 49.2 percent and robbery 6.2 percent.Sexual assault --Australia's equivalent term for rape -- increased 29.9 percent.Overall, Australia's violent crime rate rose 42.2 percent. At the same time, U.S. violent crime decreased 31.8 percent: rape dropped 19.2 percent; robbery decreased 33.2 percent; aggravated assault dropped 32.2 percent.

Australian women are now raped over three times as often as American women.
While this doesn't prove that more guns would impact crime rates, it does prove that gun control is a flawed policy. Furthermore, this highlights the most important point: gun banners promote failed policy regardless of the consequences to the people who must live with them, says the Examiner.

Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.

Here's a video that goes with the OP's first post. It's worth the time to watch.

And people in high ranking government and private industry positions that are totally incapable of performing their job. We already have required driver training and testing to get a license, and while I wouldn't be totally against similar requirements for a carry permit, clearly the government solution doesn't create a perfect situation.
I wonder what is the percentage of licensed drivers who have been in an accident, or auto related deaths compared to percentage of gun owners who have been involved in a gun related accident or death?

If you ever need to use a weapon and are successful remember those two old corny sayings. 1-Dead men tell no tales and 2-better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.( Interpretation not supplied.)
When a friend of mine took the required class for his CC permit in Michigan the instructor told him that if you must shoot, shoot to kill, that way there's only one side of the story.
