Default get out of jail free.

My oldest, Joshua has gotten into the habit of whining about every little thing we tell him. He always says, "But DAaAaAad I don't WAaAaAnt to." or something to that effect. We have recently changed our tact on dealing with this by sending him to his room the very second he starts to whine. He calms down quickly and within 10 minutes we ask him if whining is ever appropriate and then let him explain to us the appropriate way to address his parents and deal with the situation and then let him out of his room. It seems to be working rather well so far.
This morning Joshua did his whining thing. We sent him directly to his room. He quieted down instantly, in fact so much so that we forgot about him until his little sister came to us about a 1/2 hour later saying that her big brother wanted out of his room. "Oh sh!t" I think and immediately release him from his incarceration, ask him the standard questions then I kiss his forehead and apologize for forgetting him. About this time my wife comes out of our bedroom with a piece of paper. She hands the paper to me to read and then give to Joshua. The folded paper says, "From Mom and Dad" on the outside. when you open the paper it says, "One get out of jail free card" hehehe.

It's much harder as they get older. In a few years you'll have trouble getting him out of his room.

Great story. I wonder if he'll use it the very next time or save it for a more serious offense.
