Happy Bloomsday!
Today is June 16th, the same day which James Joyce's Ulysses takes places in 1904. Not only is it a masterpiece of language, literature, style, and sound, but it also opens with a straight razor shave.
STATELY, PLUMP BUCK MULLIGAN CAME FROM THE STAIRHEAD, bearing a bowl of lather on which a mirror and a razor lay crossed. A yellow dressinggown, ungirdled, was sustained gently behind him by the mild morning air. He held the bowl aloft and intoned:
--INTROIBO AD ALTARE DEI.
Cheers~

Here is an illustrated and simplified version of the 1st chapter.
Ulysses "Seen" | I: Telemachus | 0002
I read it last night. I haven't ever made it through the first chapter of the real thing! There are several guides on line that explain things as you go. I needed that help even with this comic book version.

I studied this one for A level English Literature. Definately heavy going, but worth the read..!

OK, I've finished four chapters in the book. Impressive, but I'm hoping the fifth one doesn't turn my stomach like the first four!
