Antiviruses/Firewalls
My Norton subscription is about to expire and I wanted to find a free alternative, since I'm not too good with cash. As far as I know, AVG stopped offering it's AV/FW package for free. Without cycling through trial versions of major AV/FW packages, is there a good freeware/open-source product for WinXP?

My primary computer is a Mac, but on my Windows machines, I use the Zone Lab's ZoneAlarm firewall. The single user version (not ZoneAlarm Pro) is free.

Thanked: 4The minimum free stuff you should have on your system is Zonealarm, Adaware, and SpybotSD. Free antivirus would be Avast or AVG (don't know if that's still free).

I wouldnt be able to comment on free, but I can comment on the best.
Panda Platinum Anti Virus
and for adware,
CounterSpy
I have worked with every major anti virus package out there, and nothing in my experience has worked better for me.
A virus hasnt penetrated my network in 3 years. Before that I used norton and they would come in about every month or so.
The network I am referring to has 57 terminals, and two servers.
I also reccomended this to my uncle who owns a major logistics company. His network is about 200+. He hasnt had a virus in the last year or so....
If you are on a network make sure to have the firewall block all communications to your local ip range, eg 192.168.0.1-254 and only allow the port for the printer, and server.

Once again, thank you gentlemen. Brian ended up being EXTREMELY helpful a couple of weeks back and I have a running AV/FW AVG setup thanks to his help. However, these would be useful to someone else in the same predicament.

Speaking of Firewalls, etc...... Every week I get numerours requests to my website for advice, product questions, etc..... only to have my replies returned because of their firewall, spam blocker, etc..... has rejected it.
The potential customer probaly thinks I have terible customer service as I didn;t reply to their questions.
When contacting any vendor, do think about your settings if you hope to get a reply.
