Ya, that is scary. I have seen them, I have used one. They will work, but they are not made with precision, nor are they made to last. Do you have a drill press? They make adapters to use drill presses, this will prematurely wear the bearings though as lesser expensive drill presses are not made to handle a side load.

Perfume pens, christmas ornaments, christmas presents, kitchen accessories, all the cool guys do it, cheaper shaving equipment,tchotchkies, allows her some me time, fix furniture as it breaks, custom drawer pulls, pet urns, pretty colors, yoyos...
What does she like?

And just how does one make a pen? I'm thinking that you need a hole down the middle that is really in the middle? I guess I would need to see it done.

Drill a hole, glue in a tube that is cut to precise length, flush the wood to the tube, mount on mandrel made for a lathe, turn to size set by special bushings on the mandrel, sand, finish, press parts according to instructions for that particular pen, then write.
Simple, fairly easy.

No, I was able to take it home that day and turn a brush handle. You will want a solid work surface to put it on. I can say that the lack of upgradability is something I'm starting to realize, but I bought it specifically for making brushes and for that it has proved a good tool.
