    Default A scenario?

I just came back from a trip into the near future yesterday.

The election is over and all the teaparty candidates have won. They control the house and senate. A couple of them have gotten together and are sure in their minds they need to cut Govt spending so they refuse to allow the budget to even come up for a vote. They refuse to allow a continuing resolution to be past. Govt shuts down. Not for a week or two but for several months. Social security checks aren't issued, Gov't pensioners get squat, Doctors don't get paid for medicare and refuse all such patients, All govt contractors don't get paid and start laying off hundreds of thoudands of employees, they have to call out the Army to man border crossings because the court won't let them force people to work without pay over such a long time. People now find out how much Govt really contributes to society because without these programs States have to start laying off millions and people are literally starving and dying in the streets and govt debts aren't getting paid and foreign investors are getting nervous and the dollar starts to fall in value.

Police Dept shrink and crime is rampant. No more enforcement of any regulations. Thousands die in food and drug taintings. No air traffic control the transportation industry shuts down.

So after 7 months the President meets with the Supreme court and says what can we do and they tell him under the constitution nothing you have to negotiate with these two senators.

They won't negotiate. They want it their way or the highway.

So the administration is faced with the total collapse of the country. The President was supposed to make a bold speech flanked by the joint chiefs at the White House but because of some cable T.V flap with the networks there was a blackout and then I was pulled back to present day so I never found out what was up his sleeve but I understand all the private militia's were suiting up and setting up choke points across the country.

    Hmm, what do you think???

I remember a short time ago when we didnt know who the President was and despite all of the political flap, life went on.

His sleeve ? If we're going to have a worst case scenario let's make it her sleeve. What would president palin do ? Probably skin a moose.

no doubt in my mind on this one... and it really is easy to figure out... He steps up to the microphones, gives the tele-prompter a stern look and says.... "This is all Bush's fault"

=thebigspendur;676287]I just came back from a trip into the near future yesterday.

I guess the army would still be allowed to work without pay? Each state would have to take over local millitary installations. I also suspect charity would make a big comeback when communities re-learned that they need to take care of their own instead of relying on a national government, one thing americans would never put up with is people dying in the streets. People would also realize how much the national government takes from society, since federal tax would stay in their states. States like california who depend on billions coming to keep their state solvent(if memory serves they are counting on 5 billion to balance the books this year), would have some hard choices, but those choices would be made easier to make without momma sams handouts.

Police Dept shrink and crime is rampant. No more enforcement of any regulations. Thousands die in food and drug taintings. No air traffic control the transportation industry shuts down.
Even with government tens to hundreds of thousand people die every year from 'safe' fda approved drugs, while others die from food borne illnesses all the while govt has been regulating our food supply. It could be argued that fewer people would die without those regulatory agencies, since people would be more suspect and not as willing to trust the pharmacuetical drugs without the FDA's(whose board is full of ex ceo's from the same companies they are policing) endorsement, and most I would suspect would turn to locally raised produce where they know the supplier first hand. Large cities would have the most trouble, most rural areas wouldnt even notice, until the city people started to pour in to get fed.
As far as police department funding goes, most people dont commit crimes just because a policeman is there, they dont commit them because they believe the action is wrong. While crime rates may rise a little, it wouldnt be anarchy, but I would bet gun ownership would rise. I wouldnt suspect transportation would be too upset, trains might make a comeback.

The one thing you forgot in your scenario is that state and local governments would still be in place. While I am sure there would be a huge adjustment period, the states could use the federal tax, since there would be no reason to send it to washington(the IRS would be gone) and would eventually get things back under control, then the states would probably decide that they need to join together for purposes of defense and foreign commerce and would write a new constitution in a convention, that would give the new federal government certain enumerated powers, like defense and would leave out all the powers that the current government had in place that had caused all the pain to the state governments when it first shut down after the budget impass. Then it would probably take about 80 years before the people forgot about why the federal government was given only certain powers and they would start making small additions, eventually leading to the same thing to happen all over again.

I think it's best to avoid politics on a razor forum. Even though my nightmare is the same as yours.
