Any Other Eagles In Here
So I was browsing through the social and noticed there isn't a group for Eagle Scouts. I am an Eagle myself, and was just wondering if there are any others to be found on SRP.

Another Eagle checking in!
If you haven't read it yet, I suggest picking up a copy of "Legacy of Honor" by Alvin Townley.
It's a fun read!

Thanked: 480Sorry to say, my scouting experience was NYC based, where the troop leader said to me "You really don't fit in here, perhaps you shouldn't come back"
But I can light a fire with the best of them, and if they still gave them, I could earn a Bee Keeping badge!
Now if they only had badges for making and drinking....
Badges, We dont need no stinkin Badges!

I am not an Eagle myself, but a former recent Scoutmaster who recently retired to devote more time to his work (teaching 90+ seniors). After 9 years as a Scout leader, I was pretty used up...I also have a son going through the Eagle process (finished his utterly-brutal trail-building project in upper 90's heat over the summer), and a younger Star Scout whom I hope will get there eventually.
Frankly, I am not sure the Eagle badge now means as much as it once did. There was a time when only about 2-4% of Scouts eventually made Eagle (if you believe the statistics frequently quoted). Now it seems that in many troops virtually everyone is expected to "get their Eagle." These are so-called "Eagle mills". I have both taught and seen numerous young men with only a perfunctory interest in the camping, service, and leadership half-heartedly go through the motions (usually hounded by a helicopter parent who just wanted the designation for college and scholarship applications) towards the badge.
Believe me, I don't intend to disparage the many fine men, including you gentlemen, who no doubt live up to the badge's lofty ideals. I'm just afraid that our current culture, in which kids get a trophy for everything they do just for showing up, has "dumbed down" this once fine institution.
I won't go into the "horror stories" because I don't want to further hijack your post and come off as sour grapes. I suspect that some of your local Scoutmasters, if pressed privately, would concur (and often do on the Scouter forums).
That said, congratulations on being part of a venerable American brotherhood. Perhaps some of the "old-school" Eagles in their communities could identify and mentor today's young men (sort of like OA, where there is lots of crossover) who have earned this designation, and help them live up to its noble ideals.
Thanks, and please forgive me if this sounded too much like a rant. There are many roads to sharp.
