Heh, if you guys think all "american beers" are the megaswills you really need to explore the craft beer section of the aisle. American craft brewers are making some of the best beer in the world at the moment (even the Brits and Germans have gone on record saying it). Of course you have to find the regional breweries like New Belgium, Magic Hat, Shipyard, etc and stay well away from the anheuser-bush crap. The cool thing about the craft brews too is they are pretty regional, so what you can get on the east coast isn't necessarily available out west and vice versa.

RE: Gary Foster's Beers
Gary,
That sounds like a description of a perfect 60/- to me. It's a beer I've always loved and is sadly becoming more difficult to find as every pub rushes to sell the latest fashionable foreign lager instead. Incidentally, if you ever get the chance to try any of the produce from the Caledonian brewery in Edinburgh (eg 80/-, Deuchar's IPA, Golden Promise), I highly recommend them. Although I wouldn't have too much of the Golden Promise as I always seem to get a strange headache the day after.

That's a real shame, a couple of places around here are starting to have some of the Scottish style ales on tap. Part of the rarity might be because the 60's and 70's are relatively low in alcohol content, though.
