Thanks for all of the great comments. We do have a few things going for us. My employer has a scholarship program that he qualifies for, so tuition and books are covered. He'll be attending the University of Utah, a local college, so he will remain living with his mother. So, the next year is planned out, and from there, who knows. So far, no huge interest in using straights, and I'm fine with that. Trying to "force" them on him would not do anygood. Using a straight needs to be his idea. Interest is there, and I'll let that little seed grow on its own. Although not quite the same, there is still a heritage in using DE razors, a good brush and learning the proper art of shaving.

Congratulations on starting a young man out right! I occasionally shave with a DE, and it puts the modern cartridge systems to shame. Not as good as a str8, but not bad. I hope he heeds firestart's advice on the rest. I wish you and yours all the best.
