Default The official soccer/football world cup thread

    Hey everybody,

I'm kinda surprised that the world cup hasn't been a topic so far. I know that Americans don't really care too much about this sport, but what about our other members?

Personally, I'm having a blast. This world cup is one of the best tournaments I can remember - and we're just one week into it!

As a side note, there is a lovely phenomenon right now on the streets of Toronto. People drive around with a flag of their home country/team they support attached to their car. I think it's great seeing all these different people from different corners of this world living together in the same place while sharing their passion for soccer.

I'd be interested to know if this is just a Toronto/Canada thing or if you guys see the same in your cities ?
I was just thinking, would it be advisable to drive around in the streets of with an Iranian flag attached to your car ?

My F.I.L. called the other day to ask if I was watching the game. I said, "Yeah, what a gane. It looks like Edmonton's going to force a sixth game". He was quite exhasperated with me. All the talk around this house is who won what game by how much. They're all in some kind of betting pool. Me ... I don't know for futbol.

I'll give you an insight to the US view of soccer. I was at a meeting on Friday and asked what they thought of the world cup and the guy next to me turned and said it's a Third world sport. Oh well I don't like it as much but I know the rest of the world does.

That's the funniest thing I've heard in a while...

    Good one
Yeah, I'm sure the Czech Republik and Italy appreciate that. Not to mention the US team that's playing against those countries.

I guess there is no limit to ignorance...

Even when I was much younger, and the Super Bowl would end and the winner's were declared "World Champions", I always wondered where the rest of the teams were...

I'm thoroughly enjoying the World Cup. Brazil's game today was great to watch, especially since my son was here to help me understand what was going on! I'm learnin'!

I've come to love soccer, despite not understanding all the rules. It looks like the most exhausting activity one can engage in. I was thrilled when the U.S. forced a tie with Italy...I figured Italy would wipe the field with them. Wish Australia would've done a bit better against Brazil, though.

It's quite simple actually... the round thing goes into the rectangular thing, that's pretty much it.
Oh well, and then there's offside. Which is easier to understand than to explain.

Wish you hadn't written that as I missed the game and the result
    nah, just kidding.
It's good to see that more and more people are enjoying the world cup.

I got demoralized after the SCG team got their posteriors handed to them (after a thorough rape) and shoved down their throats by Argentina. 6-0 That's equivalent to 10-0 or even 12-0 in hockey.
