In over my head
Lately i have been supporting a friend so she is able to finish her edjucation
And that has gone pretty well, only 3 months left
A while ago she found out that she has HPV and a resulting
cervical canser.
Prognoses for this is good if treated, but now it seems it has to wait for lack of funds
I will be selling some equipment but i do need to find another option real soon
Any ideas?

sorry to hear that.
i'm not familiar at all with norway, thought that there is a government funded healthcare available to everybody at no cost.
i guess if you need to pay out of pocket the standard options i can think of are extra job, loan, and charity.
but again, i don't know much about norway.

your best bet is to talk to the billing dept. at the hospital.. they will have all information regarding loans or payment plans.. when it comes down to it.. it doesn't matter how big the bill.. your health is worth any price they throw at you.
you and your friend will be in my thoughts.

Sorry to hear that.
As Romania is a member of EU, your friend is covered by European Health Insurance (EHIC) that covers EU, ETA and Switzerland. Your friend has a right to have health treatment in any of these countries for free or at reduced cost.'That is what i do. I drink and i know things'

Sailor is quite right.
you should try to arrange for her to get here for a period of time.
This kind of treatment can take time, so a temporary work permit or similar, will make her ellidgible for receiving free treatment in Norway.Bjoernar
Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

I did some research
I figured a bit more research was in order for this bad situation.
A family member of mine, who has lead the Norwegian delegation to the EU, told me on the phone right now that as a tourist, she will only receive acute treatment here in Norway. (the bill for this is covered by Romania, according to EU-regulations) For her to receive treatment on this kind of illness, she will have to live and work in Norway.
That, on the other hand, is fully possible, as we are part of the four freedoms of the EU, even though we are not members.Bjoernar

well, since she's in romania, that is covered there, but due to the corruption in those parts, before she gets the free coverage she may have to pay off some doctors, which still still be much cheaper than the actual cost of the treatment.
since you're saying she has 3 more months to complete her degree, unless she takes a leave right now it seems like finding work in a better country is medium term. also romania joined eu only few years ago, so a lot of the things are in the transitional period, e.g. getting a job in eu/norway may require approval by the authorities, not just finding it and moving over...
it seems to me the best option is getting the treatment in romania. it is not a third world country and the treatment is probably on par with anywhere else in the western world, the question is probably how to get through the corruption.Last edited by gugi; 02-26-2011 at 05:26 PM.
