I've spent a lot of time at my son's sporting events in the rain. I've found that Columbia rain jackets and pants to be worth their weight in gold. Combined with rubber duck shoes and a water proof video camera and I'm good to go in most downpours.

Ah, yes...the poncho. The US Army's idea of rain gear. However, when you added a poncho liner, it made a great mild weather sleeping bag. Good for summers @ Ft. Knox

That was about the only time a poncho was good. Although the low slung tent you could make with one wasnt bad either, its just when you used it for a poncho it sucked.

Helly Hansen rain gear is amazing. I've got a packable rain coat from them that's going on a decade old, has only been washed never, and still keeps me dry. That being said, if you want a less pricey option, the L.L. Bean stuff is pretty good, too. I bought one of their rain jackets for my wife a couple years ago and it's holding up really well. Keeps her dry and didn't cost near what my jacket did.
