I'm a latecomer to computers, 1995 IIRC, but started with a 386 PC for a few months then various PPC Macs running OS 7 & upwards. Still using an older 2005 Powerbook on OSX 10.4. Haven't updated as still have software requiring Classic.
The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

I am and love it. I have an IMac a lot like yours.
Did you get Applecare when you purchased your Mac? If not, get it pronto. I had a complete hardrive failure a couple of weeks ago. I was able to get it replaced by an authorized Apple service agent at no charge."Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter." Mark Twain

I've switched pretty much to macs for my personal computers. Pretty nice toys. It's still much easier to do a real number crunching work on linux though.
I also don't buy applecare ahead of time since I don't need phone support from people who know less about computers than me, and if there's a hardware issue it's covered anyways.
I did have one mac mini fail a month or two after the 1 year initial warranty expired and back then I missed to buy apple care before then. It ended up costing me the same out of pocket since I convinced apple my unresolved bugreports were a signature of the faulty hardware and they never addressed it while in warranty. They did cover the parts and i paid for the labor at the local authorized shop (and 3 months later they had to redo it again, this time w/o hassle since it was under the warranty)
Nevertheless it was a big waste of time until I figured that the technical support while agreeing with my conclusions had no power whatsoever to do anything and I had to get customer service who didn't understand any of the technical part, but had the power to make the customer happy.
I've switched to keeping my macs at the current versions, which as of late seems to be less than a year, but if I'll ever keep a mac for more than a year I'll certainly be buying that apple care in the 12th month. But I like new toys, so this 2010 macbookpro is getting replaced in the next few weeks with the just released 2011 model.

I hopped on board the Mac train about two years ago, but since then it's replaced all my PCs. I use it for personal and business and quite frankly, haven't looked backed. One year I managed to go through three dell laptops, and with my MacBook pro I haven't had to fix it yet. Knock on wood.

Oh yeah. That's the one thing I never turn down, PC or Mac. I've had extended warranties save my bacon more than once. The only trouble I've had with anyone honoring their extended warranty is toshiba. I had a laptop with extended warranty, toshiba told me walmart was supposed to do any extended warranty work, walmart told me it ws toshiba.

How the heck is Wal Mart supposed to do the warranty work?
Recently got a used Macbook and am loving it.I just need to get the Dummies book as this one came with no manual. It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain

Congrats for making the switch. I've been using macs for 5 years. I'm currently using a quad-core i7 Macbook pro, with the faster hard drive (7200 rpm, 500 gigs) and 4 gigs of RAM
