Would the irresponsible bank CEO's & huge companies who are getting billions of $$ from the government so their arse can be saved be considered as people getting checks from the taxpayers ? Just immagine how much the taxpayers would save if only one of them was found to have an irregularity in his platic cup.
I guess my idea of a drug addict is more bottom of the barel than that, like a junkie who used the water from a puddle to prepare the needle that just came out of his buddie's vein. Someone who probably can't even get anything mailed to him, let alone use a PIN number.

I know this is a touchy subject and everybody thinks they're right (including myself). But I not only support this I beleive you should have to contribute some sort of community service if you are able, obviously if you are disabled then you can't. But why should people be allowed to sit home and smoke blunts and pop out a kid every 9 months to get more wellfare. It's disgusting and the people that think it's an invasion of privacy or is embarrasing or humiliating are moron's. If your not on drugs you shouldn't have any problem pissing in a cup (MAN UP). There are way to many sensitive bleeding hearts in this country who want to help the people that don't want to help themselves. I also agree with other statements about making the system more like wic. I often times see lobster, ny stips, full racks of ribs etc. getiing scanned and then.....wait for it.....OUT COMES THE EBT CARD!!!! I'm not a hateful person but I sometimes wish they choke on that food. I also noticed a comment that said something about testing the judges, and govenment employees. I think they do get tested but if they don't I don't care they have job and aren't sucking of the taxpayers tit. And to top it all of a hardworking, homeowning, taxpaying, married with 1.5 kids middle class adult like myself can't get squat for gov't aid to go back to school. TEST EM ALL AND TEST EM OFTEN!

Please mind the tone. It's contradictory to preface with "I'm not...", and then completely go against it in your next line. Wishing strangers to choke is a pretty hateful thing. We monitor these threads closely as they tend to get heated, so please keep it civil.
I'm with Gugi and HNSB on this. Rick Scott made his money in health care (with controversy as Jimmy noted) so it wouldn't surprise me if there were ulterior motives on this decision. If we're going to monitor people that receive tax dollars then monitor all of them. Have fun testing those kids at public universities receiving financial aid!
You can have a job and be on WIC/EBT, and I find it hard to believe that you can't get help to go back to school. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that any public college or university would have some sort of financial aid available for working fathers regardless of what your schooling history was.Last edited by commiecat; 06-02-2011 at 05:19 PM. Do people abuse welfare? Yes
Does welfare need serious reform? Yes
Is the welfare system even necessary? Absolutely, now more than ever.

I do apologize for my tone. My goal was not to upset anyone. This subject enrages because I see it happening everyday. I even work with people who don't want the hours cause they will lose their wellfare. If you are willing and able to work then work. I've tried all kinds of funding and all I can get is $1,500 dollars a year. Again I apologize and never intended to be "that guy".

No worries -- probably not so much the tone as some of the specifics. Basically, state your case and avoid calling people morons for arguing in favor of the opposition. Civil debate is perfectly fine but sometimes these threads get a bit heated over political and religious topics which is what we want to avoid.
I've seen anecdotal evidence myself having worked retail (Publix) in a low-income area of town. We had lots of people getting assistance and while some of them were surely taking advantage of it, I also saw people who came in and asked for applications, some of which even got temporary work. If they have data taken from across the state showing the percentage of people abusing the system, it'd be easier to to make a case. Like HNSB noted, we might just wind up paying more in tax dollars now to fund random drug screenings.
