This sounds like a good idea. Don't hurt them, just scare the carp out of them. I was also gonna suggest a humane trap but was gonna say to call the local animal control agency. They won't come out for loose cats but will remove the trapped animal. You have to harden your heart as the critter will make pitiful meows begging you to let him out. Trap them then afterwards clean the cage, use fresh bait, change locations and keep trapping.

Thanked: 240I have seen the motion sensor sprinklers used to great effect to combat deer from eating gardens and blu herons from eating koi out of peoples' koi ponds. I can't comment on there effectiveness against feral cats but imagine that the sudden sound, water, and movement would be effective against most wild animals.

I know of at least 4 cats that belong to people. I'm not 100% sure if there are any feral cats or not but at least once a night I hear screeching that sounds like the devil made his SWMBO mad so I'm assuming there are either feral ones around or they just don't like each other.
I did steal my wife's jar of cayanne pepper and sprinkled it all around. I'll see if there are any new holes tomorrow.

Thanked: 983Orange peel. Cats hate the scent of citrus. Scatter it around the garden beds.

Thanked: 46If they're fighting over territory or mating rights then that's what it will sound like. The first night you may find a few holes but as they go to lick their paws afterwards the burn will be noticed. If they drop their butts in the cayenne, however, you will hear about it pretty quickly. From a city block away.

Thanked: 275I've used cayenne pepper against squirrels, and it works pretty well. No harm to try it against cats, and it's probably cheaper than commercial cat repellents.
I, too, have had fantasies of sitting quietly on my porch with an air pistol, waiting . . .
