Thanked: 324Perspicacious Poetic Ponderings
I thought of this on the way to work this morning and goofed off long enough to pen it and now to post it.
I hope others will contribute their own perspicacious poetic ponderings and reminiscent ruminations in this thread, too.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Minutes in Memoriam
Milky shower clouds obscure my visage;
Product of my father's father's father.
Anxiously I swipe the folds of cotton terry
Sweeping away the opaque reflection
Revealing genetic threads running in lines on my face.
The pungence of lye soap slick with clay
Blooms from the cup and the puck,
Scrubbed with tawny handled hair
As I lather up a memory only ever imagined
To explore a chore as never done before.
Faded and dry black horn scales once polished-
Now ridged and bitten pivot slowly in my hands.
And the Sheffield steel heirloom lazily stretches
No better for the long attic hibernation
But virile nonetheless.
Recently run across hone and stone
It's gleaming smile greets me glinting incandescence.
The strip of hanging Russian shell awaits
To caress it's length and burnish a naked blade,
Keening the edge for a new day's work.
My face now foamed and lathered anticipates
A few precious minutes in memoriam
As this ritual begins to conjure up the past
To break and appease my mental fast
Savoring a slice of my great Grandfather's life.Last edited by PapaBull; 09-29-2011 at 03:13 PM.

Man! That says a lot! I feel similar when using old steel, but could never be so eloquent! Thanks for sharing it!

Never thought about the fact that my Great Grand Father did the str8 shave everyday as part of his normal routine. Makes you wonder what else we miss out on.

Lovely thoughts put to text. I enjoy the anticipation, excitement and calm you have written. I too respect the connection to the past you shared.
We all have stories and reading your poem wants me to share many all at once, haha.
I leave with just on annedote though.
Grandpa, being a Polish immigrant, settled near Syracuse NY, working as a Potter for Syracuse China. When my parents were married, he gave them a china set that he fired himself.
I have had a Syracuse razor sitting in my personal non restored pile for a long time. At one time someone replaced the scales with molted horn handles. I am constantly torn what to do with this blade to provide the proper respect for this blade. I'll probably be making simple black scales, with a wedge cut from a china plate from that same pattern. ( not one of those original plates, but one I got from ebay in the pattern years ago)
Thanks for stirring my emotions.
