Funny, baseball players can use steroids, football players can use HGH but heaven forbid they enjoy a dip or a chew. Unbelievable!
Yeah like politicians have nothing else to worry about everything is going so well!!!!!!!
I'm enjoying a huge gum buster of Grizzly Snuff to woller in my indignation. Yeah, I can't imagine anything but baseball players chewing tobacco being the biggest thing on the radar in Congress. Unbelievable, perhaps a "None of the Above" campaign for 2012 is in order.

I think they ought to ban the bat. When watching their role models, kids may get the impression that it's ok to hit things with blunt objects. Don't even get me started on the spikes.
I don't give a hoot about tobacco in baseball. It doesn't affect me either way.
I don't think our elected officials should be wasting their time policing baseball. They had no business conducting the steroid hearings, and they have no business trying to ban tobacco.

I think that one of the problems with our society is that people teach children to idolize these rich entertainers. I think we should teach our children to go play their own games and ignore the antics of these millionaire leeches. Then this would be a non issue.
I live in Ramsey county in MN and the Vikings are threatening to leave if I and my neighbors don't ante up a sales tax increase to subsidize them. They bypassed putting the issue up to a vote because they know that the average citizen that can't afford to go to their games would say NO! I work in the neighboring county and will spend what I can there instead of at home if this passes.

In his day, Babe Ruth was probably the idol of every red blooded American Male child in this country. Not only did he chew but he often smoked cigars in the dugout, had a ad contract with Kaywoodie pipes and was likely still drunk or at least hung over during most of the games he played. I doubt he endangered anyone's health. This is typical nanny state hyperbole. By dipping snuff, these baseball players are risking the health of millions of kids? Whatever happened to parents? Is it the job of athletes, rappers and pop stars to raise America's children? Or perhaps it's the nanny state? Aren't parents supposed to be role models? Aren't parents supposed to teach their kids right from wrong? How to think for themselves and make their own way? Apparently that's just a dangerously old fashioned notion and the modern day sheep derive their values and world view from images on the glass nipple. No damn wonder our country is falling apart.
In his day George Washington was the hero of the nation. Every white child wanted to be a general and a president, and own slaves even in the free state of Pennsylvania. What happened to that? The slaves got a full vote, got free, women got to vote, then even to govern! One of these days a woman may just become a president. If that's not a neutering of the american male, I don't know what is!
I know those may be old fashioned notions, but modern day sheep apparently derive their worldview from the ideas of the craziest talk show host and/or religious lunatic. No wonder this country was built on immigrants and to this day has to look for people with the skills to think outside of its borders.
While I am certain this thread is headed into the minefield of political discussion, I do think regulating what they chew is dumb. Still, I'm not going to turn it into a comment on your government one way or the other. I agree with the sentiment that parents need to instill in their children a sense of right and wrong. But I also think that society is responsible for the children in a more communal way that is seen less and less. When I was a kid, you respected everyone's parents, now kids barely respect their own.

Yeah, and I recon better sooner rather than later. When a person decides to make himself a soapbox and start shouting their narrow minded point of view without any hint that life generally is not black and white, I figure that's the point of doom and the mercy killing is the right thing to do.
It looks like the senators are urging the players union to ban tobacco. So this is more an attempt to ask the union to neuter itself, I think. Congress has better things to do though, don't they? Or maybe they don't. Elections are coming up soon

I believe a few things:
1. Less people use tobacco in any form than did 50 years ago.
2. Children that grow up in households in which one or both parents use tobacco are exponentially more likely to try and become addicted to tobacco.
3. Baseball players chewing or not chewing have very little or nothing to do with children deciding to chew.
4. Less government=better government.

We did a general poll in 2008 right after the election, and the 'vote' in our US membership was 3 or 4 to 1 in favor of the Republicans. That was an interesting slant. Given the landslide victory for Obama, I would have expected a 1/1 ratio.
We took some guesses about the reason. The most plausible reason I could think of was that if you are a republican, you are likely to be more of a conservative mindset and therefore more likely to have an interest in historical activities. That said, it is hardly a conclusive argument.

Btw, if you should have the idea that we close threads in which conservatives express their opinion, that is certainly not by design. Even though we don't express political bias, there are 4 republicans for every democrat, so if we can assume that threads go out of bounds at random, then there will be more 'republican' threads closed than 'democrat' threads.
Now, only if you had provided any data that backs up your beliefs, I'd have been interested in your post. Everybody can make declarative statements, which is exactly what makes those pretty much useless for anything but than reinforcing an 'us' vs. 'them' mentality.Quote:

That second paragraph illustrates my point. The gentleman in question started chewing while playing baseball. In HIGH SCHOOL. Where did high schoolers get tobacco? Home? Also, why did he start? Not because he saw a pro do it, but because his buddies told him he "had to.". Now, I will admit that my argument is not logically sound, using one limited example to express an idea about the whole and drawing a conclusion to further another idea, but it shows what I'm trying to say. Do pro baseball players influence kids? Sure, they have to a little bit. But do you know what works great to counteract that influence? When on the way home from the game I say to my son or daughter, "Did you see that guy using tobacco? Isn't that gross? That could kill him, couldn't it?". Influence nullified.

Point 4 data: Hell, I don't have any data, it's just my belief. I believe very strongly in a strong local government, one in which the elected don't rely on their positions for income, but rather use their offices to further the goals of the electorate.
It doesn't matter whether the politician is Republican, Democrat, Whig, Tea-party, Green, or Independent, at a certain level they all become corrupt. Tax and spend or tax and give it to their friends.
When politics becomes a profession, that where the problem starts. When a local township supervisor has to see his electorate in the grocery store or at the gas station every day, he tends to remember who put him in office and why he was put into office.
